Key mechanism for controlling the body's inflammatory response discovered

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Researchers at Queen Mary, University of London have discovered how a key molecule controls the body's inflammatory responses. The molecule, known as p110delta, fine-tunes inflammation to avoid excessive reactions that can damage the organism. The findings, published in Nature Immunology? September 30, could be exploited in vaccine development and new cancer therapies.

A healthy immune system reacts to danger signals -- from microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, or from the body's own rogue cells, such as cancer cells. This tightly controlled reaction starts with an inflammatory phase that alerts and activates the body to react against the danger signals. Once the danger has been cleared, it is critical that the body's inflammatory phase is shut down to avoid overreaction.

Control over the timing of inflammation is essential and is disrupted in a range of diseases: inflammation that is triggered too quickly or not controlled appropriately can lead to a potentially lethal endotoxic (septic) shock or, in a more chronic state, contribute to the development of diseases such as cancer, arthritis, asthma and multiple sclerosis.

A better understanding of the control mechanisms involved in orchestrating the body's inflammatory response will help in the development of better and more targeted treatments for a variety of diseases.

Professor Bart Vanhaesebroeck, from the Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary, University of London, who supervised the research, said: "For years scientists have been puzzled by the way in which p110delta can both fuel and restrain inflammatory reactions in the body. Thanks to the improved understanding that we have achieved through use of genetics and pharmacology, we have now identified one of the specific pathways that p110delta controls."

The researchers found that p110delta balances the immune response by regulating a particular type of immune cell, the dendritic cell. These cells sense and initiate an immune response, primarily provoking inflammation when they encounter "foreign bodies," including bacteria. By using dendritic cells from mice that lacked active p110delta, the study found that p110delta controls the transition of a bacteria-sensing receptor (TLR4) from the surface of the dendritic cell into its interior, a key step which allows the dendritic cell to initiate the shut-down phase of the inflammation.

Dr Ezra Aksoy, from the Barts Cancer Institute, the first author of the paper, said: "Temporarily interfering with p110delta activity could allow us to modulate the balance between the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways, opening up new therapeutic avenues to be exploited in the fields of vaccination, cancer immunotherapy and chronic inflammatory diseases."

NHL and players' union reps meet again for second consecutive day

The Associated Press
Published Saturday, Sep. 29, 2012 9:30AM EDT
Last Updated Saturday, Sep. 29, 2012 12:16PM EDT

NEW YORK -- Progress was finally made during negotiations between the NHL and the players' association, but neither side came close to celebrating.

With core economic issues far away from the bargaining table on Friday, the league and union got back to talking in a pair of sessions that totalled about five hours and included a private meeting between Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr.

Secondary issues were discussed, and some agreements were made, but none regarding the most contentious of topics that have left NHL players still locked out two weeks before the regular season is supposed to begin.

"I wish we had spent today on what we consider to be the more meaningful issues, but it is what it is," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "We really need to hear from the players' association on those. We need some kind of sign that they are prepared to compromise their economic position because we haven't had that since Aug. 14.

"We'll see if we get there."

At least they got back to talking -- which hadn't happened since a few days before the NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16.

"It was a good day," Daly said. "We went through a lot of the areas we'd covered over the summer. We started closing off some agreements in some areas, and some continued areas of disagreements in others. It's part of the process."

All of the issues, big and small, must be ironed out before hockey can get out of the board room and back on the ice. So while the divisive topics still need to be tackled, the smaller ones have to be worked on, too.

That was the goal on Friday, and will continue to be on Saturday and Sunday when talks continue at the league's New York office.

"I don't want to use the adjective optimistic, but it was a productive discussion," NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr said. "We had a good session, and hopefully it will continue and build momentum."

A handful of players also took part in Friday's talks.

The groups agreed on issues related to player safety and drug testing, areas that weren't expected to be contentious. When they get back together over the weekend, they still aren't expected to dive into the splitting up of hockey-related revenue.

Players received 57 per cent of the net hockey-related revenues in the previous collective bargaining agreement, and owners want to bring that number down under 50 per cent.

The sides aren't moving closer to a compromise while they talk about other issues.

And that is where the frustration lies. The NHL is waiting for the players' association to make a counterproposal to one the league made in the previous bargaining session more than two weeks ago.

"We can't make them talk about what they don't want to talk about," Daly said. "In fairness, we do have to cover these issues if we're going to reach an agreement. What we're doing today is important, it's just not the most important things we can be doing.

"We've made at least two consecutive moves in significant dollars in their direction, and they haven't moved a single dollar in our direction since Aug. 4."

Former player Mathieu Schneider, now an NHLPA special assistant to the executive director, said Friday morning that there were agreements on more rigorous drug testing, expanding it to parts of the year during which testing is not currently done.

Neither side sees the use of performance-enhancing drugs as a problem in the NHL.

"We're in agreement that it's not an issue in our sport," Schneider said. "I think it's in the players' best interest as well as the sport to close off any possible time during the year where players could use."

It is not impossible that monetary issues will come up for discussion in this round of talks, they just aren't scheduled. Neither side has indicated it is prepared to make a new offer now regarding how to split up the more than $3 billion annual pot of hockey-related revenue.

"In general, when you're dealing with collective bargaining, when you start to have agreements on smaller issues, it can lead to bigger issues," Schneider said, "but it's still too early to say."

These are the first talks since the lockout was put in place on Sept. 16 and they came a day after the league cancelled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is to start Oct. 11.

If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be in danger of being lost. The NHL cancelled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that eventually led to the collective bargaining agreement that expired this month.

"The calendar continues to tick along," Daly said. "My guess is as time goes on, regular-season games are at risk. I don't think it can be any more urgent than where we are now. We've had that level of urgency for a long time. In some respects you can meet all you want, but if there is no compromise or no movement or no new proposals I am not sure at the end of the day what you're meeting over.

"There is a very high degree of urgency certainly on our side. I can't speak for their side, but I am sure they would tell you there is a degree of urgency there, too."

Steve Fehr contended that the players' association is willing to discuss any issues at any time to try to make a deal soon.

"We can discuss the core issues whenever they want to do it," he said. "Bargaining is not ping pong. There are no rules on who has to serve."

What were the cheapest and most expensive consoles in gaming ...

Nintendo?s decision to price the Wii U at $300 (and $350 for a version with more storage) raised some alarm bells among price-conscious consumers, who noted that the Wii debuted at just $250 in 2006.

That made us wonder which console was the best bargain ? and which was the worst bargain ? in all of video game history at the time of launch. Fortunately for us, the folks at Statista like doing math. They calculated the launch prices for video game consoles throughout history, and then they adjusted the price for 2012 dollars based on inflation rates. And here are the results. The Neo Geo turns out to be the most ridiculously priced system at the time of its launch, coming out in 1990 at $650, which is $1,146 in today?s dollars. 3DO, which debuted in 1993, was close behind at the outlandish $699 price, or $1,114 in today?s dollars. The cheapest console was the Nintendo GameCube, priced at $199 (or $259 in today?s dollars) back in 2001.

Sure, we know that adding bigger storage and more accessories will make some of these systems priced below more expensive, but we?re measuring the base system cost.

By comparison, the Nintendo Wii U is coming out at $300 on Nov. 18. That price will make it the fifth most-reasonably priced console in video game history. Here?s a link to Statista?s research on game consoles.

Real Estate ? Spaces: Starting a project from scratch

Roland Quintanilla and Ken Mohundro had intended to take their time and gradually renovate the Woodlawn Terrace house that became theirs last year.

They had downsized from a home in Monte Vista, one that was twice the size of the Spanish-style house that they bought from San Antonio Express-News reporter John Tedesco.

?The original plan was to remodel the bathroom,? Quintanilla notes.

But the plan changed when his father, a retired contractor, got a look at the two-bedroom, one-bathroom house built in the 1920s.

?His dad came by and said ?Let?s just gut it and start redoing it,?.? Mohundro said.

So they moved out of the house that they had just moved into and began a total renovation that took three months.

?His dad (Lorenzo Quintanilla) did most of the stuff; we did what we could,? said Mohundro, a business owner who used to build houses in Austin.

The interior was taken down to the studs. Rebuilding allowed the installation of things the house never had: insulation and central heat and air conditioning.

The floor plan expanded with the addition of a second bathroom and an extra-large bedroom closet. The narrow linear kitchen got a few more square feet by taking in the space of a small porch at one end and removing a wall to the breakfast nook at the other end.

The kitchen also got a contemporary look with marble countertops, glass tile backsplash and stainless steel appliances. The serene green on the walls is one of two shades of green Roland Quintanilla selected for all the rooms.

French doors replaced a pair of windows in the dining room, between the kitchen and the living room, creating a second entry from the front porch. Interior French doors, from the dining room to the bedroom behind it were replaced by a solid wall, improving furniture placement in both rooms.

The living room fireplace is about the only feature of the original house that remains in the modernized interior. But it was not untouched; the fireplace was renovated, getting fresh plaster and a marble hearth.

Although they wanted to save the original wood floors, that wasn?t possible. ?They had been sanded too many times,? Mohundro explained. A new dark wood floor was installed on top of the old floor in every room.

Roland Quintanilla, also a businessman, wanted to capture the essence of a spa in the original bathroom. The owners hauled out a very heavy tub and the pedestal sink and brought in a whirlpool tub surrounded by green glass tile and a double-sink vanity topped with the same marble used in the kitchen and on the fireplace.

Not all the work was inside; outside got a lot of attention as well. The previous white exterior was painted tan. Frames of the new windows were outlined in terra cotta, matching the roof tiles.

In the backyard, a covered deck was added outside the two bedrooms. It?s become a cozy place for lounging after a dip in the brand-new pool that downsizing to a smaller and less expensive house enabled them to afford this summer.

Chrissie Murnin is a San Antonio freelancer.

HOUSE RULES

Roland Quintanilla and Ken Mohundro have renovated eight properties, the latest being their Woodlawn Terrace house. They offer renovation advice based on their experiences.

Divide the duties: ?He?s more into the construction side of it all ? I?m more into the design, as far as the visual,? Quintanilla said. He selected most of the materials and the two shades of green, Caraway Seed and Winter Delta, used throughout the house

Work together: ?We?re usually on the same page; we?re never too different. We?ve done a few projects already; so we?re pretty used to what our styles are and what each other wants,? Quintanilla said.

Prepare for stress: ?When I was building houses in Austin, they would say that building a new house could cause a divorce or separation,? Mohundro said.

Expect the unexpected: ?Always be aware that you?re going to find something that you?re not going to expect,? Quintanilla said.

Plan upgrades: ?Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, literally everything?s brand-new,? Mohundro said. ?The only thing we didn?t do was the foundation,? Quintanilla noted.

Have a relative who?s a contractor: ?It doesn?t hurt,? Quintanilla said. His father, Lorenzo Quintanilla, is a retired contractor and did much of the renovation.

A rare apology in the Middle East. Cherish it.

Libyan leader Megarif apologizes to the world and the US for past and current actions. With so much invective and violence in the Middle East, the region needs the healing power of such humility and contrition.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / September 28, 2012

Libya's interim President Mohammed el-Megarif prepares to address the United Nations General Assembly Sept. 27. He offered an apology for the acts of the former regime of Muammar Qaddafi.

With Iran?s president speaking of ?uncivilized Zionists? and the Israeli prime minister calling Iran ?the most dangerous country in the world,? it may seem odd for one Middle East leader to stand before the United Nations this week and apologize for his country?s past violence.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Yet that is what Mohammed el-Megarif, Libya?s interim president, did on Thursday.

He actually gave two apologies on behalf of all Libyans for the actions of Muammar Qaddafi. One was for the late leader?s disrespect toward the UN Charter on rights. The other was for ?all the harm, all the crimes committed by that despot against so many innocents ... for the extortion and terrorism he meted on so many states.?

Just days earlier, Mr. Megarif also apologized personally to US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Sept. 12 attack in Benghazi that killed four American diplomats. (Details of that assault remain unclear.)

And perhaps in a sign of a trend in the Middle East, Yemen?s president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, also apologized ? for an attack by a crowd on the US embassy over the anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube.

For Americans, who by now have seen waves of apologies from public figures like Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Tiger Woods, it may be easy to overlook this unusual contrition in one of the world?s toughest neighborhoods. Yet humility, vulnerability, and making amends is just what the Middle East needs to deal with its intense, long-lasting conflicts.

If apologies are heartfelt, they can have real healing power. They bring trust and honesty to a relationship, even if they are not made by the perpetrator but simply on behalf of a country or institution.

They can help prevent a repeat of an offense. And they are better still if they also come with some restorative justice. Libya?s leader, for example, promises to cooperate with the United States in bringing the embassy attackers to justice.

Postwar Germany set a high standard for the world in its apologies for Nazi atrocities. In 1970, German Chancellor Willy Brandt dropped to his knees during a visit to a memorial for Polish Jews killed during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943.

Many US presidents, from Dwight Eisenhower to George W. Bush, have apologized for current or past acts by the government. In the 2012 presidential campaign, Mitt Romney has often accused President Obama of apologizing for past US deeds, mainly in the Middle East. (Mr. Romney?s 2010 book is titled ?No Apology: The Case for American Greatness.?)

While the word ?apologize? or ?sorry? wasn?t used by Mr. Obama in cases cited by Romney, the president has criticized the actions of his predecessor before foreign audiences, claiming they were not representative of American values.

Such domestic disputes over values may make Americans less sensitive to hearing important apologies like those of Libya?s Megarif. He even stressed his country?s ?solidarity? with the US and that Libya?s future will be ?chartered by people like Chris Stevens [the slain ambassador], not by people like his killers.?

Today?s apology culture in the US can sometimes be overdone. And detecting sincerity in a public figure?s utterance of ?sorry? isn?t always easy. Yet Americans seem past the time when they will follow the advice of actor John Wayne who, in a 1949 western movie, said: ?Never apologize and never explain ? it?s a sign of weakness.?

So, thank you, Libya. Apology accepted. Let a new day dawn.

U.S. drops Iranian MEK dissident group from terrorism list

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Friday formally removed the Iranian dissident group Mujahadin-e Khalq from its official list of terrorist organizations, but underscored serious concerns about the group which is seeking to recast itself as an Iranian opposition force.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the decision, effective on Friday, in view of the MEK's public renunciation of violence, the absence of confirmed acts of terrorism by the MEK for more than a decade, and their cooperation in the peaceful closure of their paramilitary base in Iraq, the State Department said in a statement.

"With today's actions, the Department does not overlook or forget the MEK's past acts of terrorism, including its involvement in the killing of U.S. citizens in Iran in the 1970s and an attack on U.S. soil in 1992," the statement said.

"The Department also has serious concerns about the MEK as an organization, particularly with regard to allegations of abuse committed against its own members."

Clinton was in New York this week for a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. Iran on Thursday blamed the MEK, which it called "a terrorist sect," for accosting a senior Iranian diplomat in New York and condemned the U.S. decision remove the group from the terrorism list.

The MEK's Paris-based leader Maryam Rajavi, who has sought to rebrand the group as a potential opposition force in Iran, welcomed the decision.

"This designation was a gift to the mullahs' (clerical) regime, and removing it is a major blow because they understand better than anyone else the potential of the movement to operate and flourish in Iran," she told Reuters in an interview.

"This decision should put an end to a policy of appeasement which has existed for the past 15 years, and it has once again proven that wherever there is a fraction of freedom and justice our resistance will be the victorious one."

But a senior U.S. official, briefing reporters after Clinton's decision was announced, said Washington did not see the group as viable opposition or democratic movement.

"We have no evidence and we have no confidence that the MEK is an organization that can promote democratic values that we would like to see in Iran," the official said. "They are not part of our picture in terms of the future of Iran."

INTENSE LOBBYING

Officials said last week that Clinton had decided to remove the MEK from the terrorism list, but the formal announcement was made only after appropriate notification of Congress.

The U.S. decision comes after years of intense lobbying by the MEK, which had seen many of its members stranded in Iraq as the group fell out of Baghdad's favor after Saddam Hussein's downfall in 2003.

The group marshaled the support of dozens of members of Congress as well as political, government and media notables.

Public figures who have endorsed the MEK's campaign included former CIA directors R. James Woolsey and Porter Goss, former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, former FBI Director Louis Freeh, and Mitchell Reiss, a former State Department official who is a top foreign policy adviser to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Prominent Democratic Party figures who have supported the MEK have included former Pennsylvania and Vermont Governors Ed Rendell and Howard Dean. People familiar with its activities said that the MEK had paid generous fees to some of those who made speeches in support of its de-listing.

A senior U.S. official dismissed suggestions that the lobbying campaign had played a role in the group's rehabilitation.

"These decisions are made on the merit and not made to appease any group of lobbyists no matter how famous they are," the official told reporters.

"The United States government is not going to take anyone off the list if it genuinely believes that they pose an imminent threats, that they are going to commit terrorist acts, or that they are somehow wedded to violence."

LEAVING CAMP ASHRAF

The United States had repeatedly said its decision on the MEK's terrorist designation hinged partly on the group's remaining members leaving Camp Ashraf, an Iraqi base where they had lived for decades, and moving to a former U.S. military base in Baghdad from which they were expected to be resettled overseas.

Officials said this month that the final large group of dissidents had moved from Camp Ashraf to the new location, ending a long standoff with Iraqi authorities.

The group, also known as the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran, calls for the overthrow of Iran's clerical leaders and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. It also led a guerrilla campaign against the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran during the 1970s, including attacks on American targets.

Removal from the list means Washington will no longer block the group's property and interests in property in the United States and that U.S. entities may engage in transactions with the MEK without obtaining a license.

World Chicken Festival offers something to crow about

Courtesy World Chicken Festival

The World Chicken Festival in London, Ky., has the world's largest stainless-steel skillet, which measures 10.5 feet across and uses 300 gallons of cooking oil to cook 600 chicken quarters at a time.

By Rob Lovitt, NBC News contributor

The folks at the International Olympic Committee would probably disagree, but for sports-minded travelers, it?s not too late to experience the London Olympics.

The London Kentucky Olympics, that is, will take place in the town of the same name this weekend. You won?t find a balance beam or high-jump bar, but for fans of burping contests, armpit serenades and toilet-lid horseshoes, it?s clearly the place to be.

?Well, the Olympics were in London, England, this year, so we decided to have the London Kentucky Olympics,? said Elaine Harris, executive secretary of the London-Laurel County Tourist Commission. ?It?s a cousin to the redneck games ? a real close cousin.?

It?s also the newest addition to the town?s most famous event, the World Chicken Festival?(Sept. 27?30). Now in its 23rd year, the fowl-themed festivities attract more than 150,000 people each year and feature enough offbeat activities to earn the honorific of Overhead Bin?s Weird Festival of the Month for September.

The event owes its existence to a bit of fortuitous culinary history. In 1930, an itinerant entrepreneur named Harland Sanders began serving meals to the travelers who stopped at his gas station in the nearby town of Corbin, Ky. Working from a ?secret blend of 11 herbs and spices,? he eventually opened a full-service caf?, got commissioned as a colonel by the governor and founded a restaurant chain that now has 17,000 locations around the world.

August's Weird Festival of the Month: Haggis hurling at the Highland Games

To commemorate that heritage, town boosters set out to create a family-oriented festival with rides, contests, craft booths and, of course, plenty of chicken. ?The first one was pretty small,? said Harris, ?but within a couple of years, it took off and was just unreal.?

Today, the festivities include a parade, car show, live music and poultry-themed activities for all ages.

There's a $100 prize for the Rooster Crowing, Clucking and Strutting Contest at the World Chicken Festival.

Have a knack for chicken mimicry? The Rooster Crowing, Clucking and Strutting Contest is your chance to strut your stuff, flap your wings and squawk your way to $100 cash and barnyard bragging rights. Be forewarned, though, there are some grade A competitors in this particular coop.

?It?s not just crowing. It?s the strutting, it?s what a chicken does when it eats and the way it acts when it lays an egg,? said veteran clucker-strutter Cameron Humfleet, who took the top spot two years ago and is hoping to regain his title this year.

?Last year I got beat by a guy who came in and sang 'Smoke on the Water,' but in a clucking way,? he told NBC News. ?I definitely wasn?t expecting that.?

Courtesy World Chicken Festival

An activity for the kiddos during the World Chicken Festival is the Chicken Scratch, in which kids hunt for dollar bills and other prizes hidden in a 600-pound pile of flour.

Meanwhile, the kids will be competing in a variety of pullet-sized events, including the Chicken Scratch, in which the little ones hunt for dollar bills and other prizes hidden in a 600-pound pile of flour.

?They end up looking just like chickens that you roll in flour before you fry them,? said contest coordinator Rodney Hendrickson.

Fortunately, the organizers reserve that last step for the real deal, taking advantage of the festival?s most impressive claim to fame: the world?s largest stainless-steel skillet. Measuring 10.5 feet across, the 700-pound behemoth uses 300 gallons of cooking oil to cook 600 chicken quarters at a time.

In fact, over the course of the four-day festival, volunteers will cook 7,000 pieces of chicken. As with the Colonel?s original, the recipe is a highly classified secret. All the organizers will share is that it involves 375 pounds of flour, 75 pounds of salt, 30 pounds of pepper, 30 pounds of paprika and ?special ingredients.?

Whatever those special ingredients are, they must be doing the trick given the thousands of people who descend on the town every year. Some, no doubt, come for the craft booths and live music; others, for the kids? games and carnival rides. And this year, some will probably come to get in touch with their inner redneck at the London Kentucky Olympics.

?Hey, everybody likes to eat chicken,? said Hendrickson, ?even rednecks.?

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigned Friday on an uphill battle to win Pennsylvania, acknowledging it would be a "shock" if he were able to overcome President Barack Obama's lead in the state.

Facing a narrowing path to electoral victory, Romney courted donors at Philadelphia's exclusive Union League Club before a midday rally in suburban Wayne. The state has not supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly a quarter-century and his campaign is not running any television ads in Pennsylvania.

"We really would shock people if early in the evening of Nov. 6 it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way and actually did come our way. That can happen," Romney told about 200 donors who paid as much as $50,000 to attend his morning fundraiser.

He changed to a more optimistic tune later in a speech before a larger crowd at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.

"The Obama campaign thinks Pennsylvania is in their pocket, they don't need to worry about it," Romney said to shouted objections from the crowd. "You're right and they're wrong ? we're going to win Pennsylvania. We're going to take the White House."

Aides privately concede Obama has the advantage in Pennsylvania and suggested Romney's visit ? his first to the state in more than two months ? was largely designed to raise the money needed to narrow Obama's edge in more competitive states. The campaign would not say how much it raised at the event, but Romney brought in $5 million at a Washington gathering Thursday and is expected to raise another $7 million at a Boston fundraiser later Friday.

"My priority is job creation and growing incomes," he told the donors in Philadelphia. "My priority is not trying to punish people who have been successful."

Obama also will focus on raising cash Friday at three fundraising events in Washington.

He was set to deliver remarks at a finance event at the Capital Hilton, where tickets start at $250 but go as high as $10,000 per couple. Obama planned to attend a smaller fundraiser at a private residence before returning to the Capitol Hilton for a third event.

Both candidates worked statesmanship into their politicking Friday with separate telephone calls to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Romney criticized Obama for not meeting with Netanyahu this week during his visit to the United Nations, where the prime minister warned the world only has until next summer to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb. Aides to both candidates did not mention that dire declaration in their reports of the calls.

Romney told the crowd at Valley Forge that he didn't know how any student at the school could support Obama. He said the president was cutting military spending while job opportunities for college graduates have decreased.

"On both fronts this president's policies have not worked for this country's young people," Romney said.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith objected to Romney's criticism, since Republicans in Congress, including Romney running mate Paul Ryan, overwhelmingly backed defense spending reductions when they voted for deficit-cutting legislation last year.

"In next week's debate, facts will matter, and Mitt Romney simply failed to meet the bar of honesty today," Smith said in a statement.

Obama and Romney are scheduled to face off Wednesday in Denver for the first of three debates, which may represent the challenger's best remaining opportunity to change the trajectory of his campaign. Romney has struggled through a series of perceived missteps in recent weeks amid signs that confidence in the nation's economy is on the rise.

Obama met with advisers Friday at Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington to prepare for the debates before heading Sunday to Nevada to hold practice sessions. His campaign released a political memo on Friday saying it expects Romney "to be a prepared, disciplined and aggressive debater."

However, it said that while the president would be laying out his vision for the coming years, Romney has "signaled that he will come to indict the president for the fact that the economy has not fully recovered from the collapse of 2008."

The Obama memo and an accompanying Web video also aim to debunk claims by Romney that the president has mischaracterized the Republican's positions on the auto industry bailout, abortion and raising taxes on wage earners to cover tax cuts for multimillionaires.

With economic concerns paramount for voters, Obama and Romney continue to jab over who would best protect American manufacturing workers against unfair trade and currency practices by China. In an interview with the Plain Dealer newspaper of Cleveland, Obama said the United States must push hard but "not go out of our way to embarrass" China to get results.

"There's a strong nationalist sentiment inside of China, and they've got their own economic pressures," Obama told the newspaper during a campaign visit this week. "So we're not interested in triggering an all-out trade war that would damage both economies. What we're interested in is making sure they're treating our workers fairly, and that's what we've delivered on."

Obama on Friday used his presidential authority to block a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects near a Navy base in Oregon, citing national security risks. It was the first time in 22 years that a U.S. president blocked such a foreign business deal.

Tiny resorbable semiconductors: Smooth as silk 'transient electronics' dissolve in body or environment

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Tiny, fully biocompatible electronic devices that are able to dissolve harmlessly into their surroundings after functioning for a precise amount of time have been created by a research team led by biomedical engineers at Tufts University in collaboration with researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dubbed "transient electronics," the new class of silk-silicon devices promises a generation of medical implants that never need surgical removal, as well as environmental monitors and consumer electronics that can become compost rather than trash.

"These devices are the polar opposite of conventional electronics whose integrated circuits are designed for long-term physical and electronic stability," says Fiorenzo Omenetto, professor of biomedical engineering at Tufts School of Engineering and a senior and corresponding author on the paper "A Physically Transient Form of Silicon Electronics" published in the Sept. 28, 2012, issue of Science.

"Transient electronics offer robust performance comparable to current devices but they will fully resorb into their environment at a prescribed time -- ranging from minutes to years, depending on the application," Omenetto explains. "Imagine the environmental benefits if cell phones, for example, could just dissolve instead of languishing in landfills for years."

The futuristic devices incorporate the stuff of conventional integrated circuits -- silicon and magnesium -- but in an ultrathin form that is then encapsulated in silk protein.

"While silicon may appear to be impermeable, eventually it dissolves in water," says Omenetto. The challenge, he notes, is to make the electrical components dissolve in minutes rather than eons.

Researchers led by UIUC's John Rogers -- the other senior and corresponding author -- are pioneers in the engineering of ultrathin flexible electronic components. Only a few tens of nanometers thick, these tiny circuits, from transistors to interconnects, readily dissolve in a small amount of water, or body fluid, and are harmlessly resorbed. Controlling materials at these scales makes it possible to fine-tune how long it takes the devices to dissolve.

Device dissolution is further controlled by sheets of silk protein in which the electronics are supported and encapsulated. Extracted from silkworm cocoons, silk protein is one of the strongest, most robust materials known. It's also fully biodegradable and biofriendly and is already used for some medical applications. Omenetto and his Tufts colleagues have discovered how to adjust the properties of silk so that it degrades at a wide range of intervals.

The researchers successfully demonstrated the new platform by testing a thermal device designed to monitor and prevent post-surgical infection (demonstrated in a rat model) and also created a 64 pixel digital camera.

Collaborating with Omenetto from Tufts' Department of Biomedical Engineering were Hu Tao, research assistant professor and co-first author on the paper; Mark A. Brenckle, doctoral student; Bruce Panilaitis, program administrator; Miaomiao Yang, doctoral student; and David L. Kaplan, Stern Family Professor of Engineering and department chair. In addition to Tufts and UIUC, co-authors on the paper also came from Seoul National University, Northwestern University, Dalian University of Technology (China), Nano Terra (Boston), and the University of Arizona.

In the future, the researchers envision more complex devices that could be adjustable in real time or responsive to changes in their environment, such as chemistry, light or pressure.

The work was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Multi University Research Initiative program, the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institutes of Health under award EB002520 and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Google Play services arrives for Android 2.2 and above, the eager can download directly

Google Play services rolls out to Android 22 and above, the eager can download directly

Google recently announced to developers the availability of a new "Services" platform, to allow better integration of its core products in 3rd party apps. The update comes in the form of an APK that will automatically find its way to handsets with Android 2.2 and above. But, for the impatient amongst you, it's available for download directly from the Play store now. This first release centers around better integration for Google+ (for account sign-in / Plus buttons etc) and providing OAuth 2.0 functionality, but it's expected that deeper functionality with the Google universe will take root soon. Most handily, as Mountain View decided to deliver this in the form of an app / APK, there's no pesky waiting around for networks to get it to you. Read up on the benefits via the more coverage links, or head to the source to make sure you're on-board.

iPhone 5 camera not much better than 4S cam, our tests show

NBC News photographer Jim Seida spent a day shooting stills?with the iPhone 5, along with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, the new Samsung?Galaxy S III and a high-end point-and-shoot from Nikon, the P7000. The results? While the iPhone 5's 8-megapixel camera performed well, it did not noticeably?outperform its most recent forebear. But there was one way that the iPhone 5 clearly?bested the 4S.

The key to the test was that Seida didn't use any special apps, just the native camera mode, and the only manipulation he did was to tap the same spot on the screen each time, to focus the camera and determine the exposure.

By?comparing low-light portraits of Seida's colleague, you can see a slight reduction in noise compared to the 4S, but the picture itself is a tad?underexposed, too.

While noise was also not a problem for the Samsung Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel camera, it did lag in detail (and also appeared somewhat dim).

Outdoors, Seida challenged the phone-cams with high color contrasts and an abundance of light. The only noticeable difference between the iPhone 5 and 4S was background detail, which could be explained away by multiple factors. (Besides, having a slightly blurred background is generally preferred.)

The Galaxy struggled a bit with exposure ? towards the top, the meter is?too washed out.

The results aren't surprising.?One of the biggest leaps for the iPhone 4S was its camera ? just look at how the iPhone 4 did in the above experiments, paying special attention to the noise in the low-light shot and the over-saturation in the outdoor shot.?Meanwhile, the specs on the iPhone 5's camera never suggested a quantum leap forward.?

But Apple has promoted its camera as improved ? going so far as to say that the new A6 chip has an image signal processor that can deliver more brightness to a picture, up to two full stops. In our real-world and controlled testing, we have not seen any significant difference.?

Consumer Reports had similarly unspectacular results in its comparison test of the iPhone 5 and 4S cameras.?Though usability is better, due to the phone's overall?faster performance and bigger screen, outdoor shooting showed a?"modest step up," yet "the claimed improvements of the iPhone 5 in handling low-light shots were not apparent in our tests."

When it comes to the front-facing camera, however, the difference doesn't require expertise to spot. The FaceTime camera on the 4S supports?"VGA-quality photos and video" in the 640x480 resolution, while the new one on the 5 brings 720p HD-quality video and 1.2-megapixel stills. Seida's self-portrait shows just?what that means:

Pregnancy and Snoring, A Wakeup Call

If you are pregnant and have recently begun to snore, it could be a bigger problem than just keeping your partner awake. University of Michigan researchers report that women who begin snoring after they get pregnant are at increased risk for high blood pressure and preeclampsia.

Along with the morning sickness, mood swings, food cravings, and an increased need to run to the bathroom, another symptom that may develop during pregnancy is snoring. It's well established that habitual snoring, which is defined as snoring three to four nights per week, is associated with sleep-disordered breathing, whether it occurs in men or women.

In the findings of this latest study, which included 1,719 third-trimester pregnant women recruited from March 2007 through December 2010, habitual snoring had a significant role in high blood pressure and was also found to present an increased risk to the mother's cardiovascular health.

The researchers discovered the following:

  • 34% of the women reported that they snored
  • 25% reported that snoring had started during pregnancy
  • Snoring that started during pregnancy, but not snoring that was present before pregnancy more than doubled the risk of high blood pressure and significantly increased the risk of preeclampsia when compared with women who did not snore

Dangers of preeclampsia and high blood pressure
Preeclampsia develops in about 5 to 8 percent of pregnant women typically after 20 weeks gestation and up to six weeks postpartum. Worldwide, an estimated 76,000 women and 500,000 infants die each year because of preeclampsia, which is characterized by a rapidly progressive rise in blood pressure and protein in the urine, and may also include sudden weight gain, headache, vision changes, shortness of breath, and other symptoms.

The impact on infants born to women with preeclampsia can be considerable:

  • Worldwide, preeclampsia is associated with up to 20% of the 13 million preterm births that occur each year, or about 100,000 births in the United States
  • Reduced blood flow to the placenta, which limits the amount of nutrients the infant receives and can result in an infant who is small for its gestational age. About 15% (4.5 million) of infants are born with this condition each year as a result of preeclampsia.
  • Approximately 10,500 infants die in the US each year from preeclampsia. In countries without the means to keep premature babies alive, the death rate can be considerable.
  • Infants born prematurely because of preeclampsia may face challenges such as epilepsy, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, deafness, and blindness.

What this study means
According to Louise O'Brien, PhD, the study's lead author and associate professor in the University of Michigan's Sleep Disorders Center, about 19 percent of disorders associated with high blood pressure during pregnancy could be alleviated if sleep-disordered breathing was treated.

Sleep disordered breathing is a term used to describe various respiratory abnormalities, of which obstructive sleep apnea is the most common. Among the most common ways to treat sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a device worn during sleep that uses air pressure to keep an individual's airways open.

O'Brien is conducting further research into the effectiveness of CPAP in treating pregnant women who snore. In the meantime, she noted that physicians should ask pregnant women whether they have started snoring and try to identify which women are at high risk for high blood pressure and preeclampsia so they can take preventive steps.

US stocks lower after bad economic data in Europe

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are opening lower on Wall Street after some gloomy economic data from Europe.

Just after the opening bell, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 53 points at 13,526. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down seven at 1,453, and the Nasdaq composite index is off 28 at 3,152.

An index of German business confidence has fallen for a fifth straight month. Germany is the powerhouse of the European economy, but some economists think it's headed for a recession.

In the U.S., Apple is opening lower after selling 5 million of its iPhone 5s in three days. Some analysts were looking for a higher number. Apple is starting the day off about 2 percent, down $14 at $687.

Obama urges UN to confront roots of Muslim rage

(AP) ? President Barack Obama told world leaders Tuesday that attacks on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America," and he called on them to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world.

"I do believe that it is the obligation of all leaders, in all countries, to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism," Obama said in a speech to the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly.

Obama also condemned the anti-Muslim video that helped spark the recent attacks, calling it "cruel and disgusting." But he strongly defended the U.S. Constitution's protection of the freedom of expression, "even views that we profoundly disagree with."

With U.S. campaign politics shadowing every word, Obama also warned that time to peacefully curb the Iranian nuclear crisis is running out.

He said there is "still time and space" to resolve the issue through diplomacy. But that time is not limited."

"Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations and the unraveling of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty," he said.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has accused Obama of not being tough enough on Iran and of turning his back on Israel and other allies in the Middle East. Romney also has said he doesn't have much faith in peace prospects between Israelis and Palestinians.

Obama told the U.N.: "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace."

Romney in separate remarks to a global conference sponsored by former President Bill Clinton, said the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that took the life of the U.S. ambassador and three other U.S. citizens was an act of terrorism.

Obama mentioned the slain U.S. ambassador, Christopher Stevens, several times in his address.

"Today, we must declare that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens and not by his killers. Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United nations," he said.

Unlike Romney, Obama has not specifically called the attacks in Libya and other U.S. missions terrorism.

Obama said that "at a time when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button," the notion that governments can control the flow of information is obsolete.

"There is no speech that justifies mindless violence," such as the attack that left the four Americans dead in Libya, Obama said.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech ? the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect."

N.M. spaceport is built, but who will come?

New Mexico Tourism Secretary Monique Jacobson says it will be New Mexico's Sydney Opera House. Virgin Galactic Chairman Richard Branson has hinted it will host the first of his new brand of lifestyle hotels. And the eclectic hot springs town of Truth or Consequences has been anxiously awaiting all the economic development the nearly quarter-billion-dollar project is supposed to bring to this largely rural part of southern New Mexico.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. How a space train was brought to life

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Sending your child's toy train into the stratosphere is no mean feat, but turning that train into an animated character requires a special blend of magic.

    2. Mars rover spots mini-moon's transit
    3. Endeavour ends its flying days in California
    4. SpaceX launch to space station is Oct. 7

But as phase one of Spaceport America, the world's first commercial port built specifically for sending tourists and payloads into space, is nearing completion, the only new hotel project that has been finalized is a Holiday Inn Express here in Truth or Consequences, about 25 (40 kilometers) miles away. And three key companies with millions of dollars in payroll have passed on developing operations in the state.

The lagging development, along with competition from heavy hitters like Florida and Texas, is raising new questions about the viability of the $209 million taxpayer-funded project ? as well as the rush by so many states to grab a piece of the commercial spaceport pie. To date, nine spaceports are planned around the United States, mostly at existing airports, and another 10 have been proposed, according to a recent report from the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.

"Right now, the industry is not there to support it," Alex Ignatiev, a University of Houston physics professor and adviser to space companies, said of the list of planned and proposed spaceports across America.

Andrew Nelson, chief operating officer of XCOR Aerospace, disagrees: "In the next couple to three years, there's going to be a demonstrative reduction in the cost to launch stuff ... so we are going to have a lot more people coming out of the woodwork," he said.

Interstate competition
Currently, the spaceport can count on two rocket companies that send vertical payloads into space ? and Virgin Galactic, the Branson space tourism venture that says it has signed up more than 500 wealthy adventurers for $200,000-per-person spaceflights. Other leaders in the race to commercialize the business and send tourists into space have been passing on New Mexico.

For example, XCOR Aerospace, which manufactures reusable rocket engines for major aerospace contractors and is designing a two-person space vehicle called the Lynx, has twice passed over New Mexico in favor of Texas and Florida. Most recently, it announced plans to locate its new Commercial Space Research and Development Center Headquarters in Midland, Texas.

Another company, RocketCrafters Inc., passed over New Mexico for Titusville, Fla. And California-based SpaceX, which sent its first robotic cargo ship to the International Space Station in May and is getting another one ready for launch next month, is looking at basing a plant with $50 million in annual salaries to Brownsville, Texas.

Locally, officials blame the lack of new businesses on the Legislature's refusal to pass laws that would exempt spacecraft suppliers from liability for passengers should the spacecraft crash or blow up. When New Mexico was developing Spaceport America in partnership with Virgin Galactic, it passed a law to exempt the carrier through 2018, but not parts suppliers. Colorado, Florida, Texas and Virginia have adopted permanent liability exemption laws for both carriers and suppliers.

The laws, called informed consent, are much like those that exempt ski areas from lawsuits by skiers, who waive their rights for claims when they buy a ski pass. Spaceport officials emphasize the carriers and suppliers would not be exempt from damage on the ground, or in cases of gross negligence.

"The issue is informed consent legislation," said Truth or Consequences Mayor John Mulcahy. "We need to get that passed."

Depending on Virgin
Companies make no secret of the fact that the liability laws have played a role in their decision to go elsewhere. But they also cite Spaceport America's remote location ? 45 miles (72 kilometers) from Las Cruces and 200 miles (320 kilometers) from Albuquerque ? and a failure by the state to offer competitive incentives as additional factors.

"We worked with (former Gov. Bill) Richardson's people as well as (Gov. Susana) Martinez," Nelson said. "They are all fine. They have been great. But they couldn't deliver the package that was necessary to get across the goal line."

Spaceport America's success is tied largely to Virgin Galactic, which signed a 20-year lease to operate its commercial space tourism business from the site. Over the next two decades, the company's lease payments and user fees are expected to generate $250 million and more. But the terms of the lease or what penalties might be imposed if Branson pulls out are not publicly known. And the facility was planned with the idea that at least one new major tenant would move in by 2016.

"We are so happy we have Virgin Galactic as anchors," said Christine Anderson, executive director of the New Mexico Space Authority, which is lobbying lawmakers to approve informed consent. "But we want to attract more tenants. ... I think this is really a critical piece of legislation that New Mexico has to have."

How long will it take?
Nelson says his company hasn't ruled out one day flying his Lynx aircraft in New Mexico. But he says the legislature's wavering on the liability exemptions "sends a message that we cannot expect a consistent response," he said.

Meantime, Branson's estimate for the first flights carrying paying passengers has been pushed back until late 2013 at the earliest. And questions remain about the facility's tourism draw.

Tourism executives and Spaceport America officials have estimated as many as 200,000 people a year would visit the futuristic center. Branson told a national hotel conference in 2011 that he might put one of his still to be developed Virgin hotels in the area. But there has been no further word on that hotel, or others that have been rumored to cater to the space crowd.

Ignatiev estimates it will be 10 years before the commercial space business really takes off, "And I don't know how many states or commercial entities can sit around for 10 years and wait for business to show up. They are going to have a problem staying viable."
