Foursquare gives business owners their own app to manage specials, track customer visits

Foursquare gives business owners their own app to manage specials, track customer visits

Foursquare just recently tweaked its privacy policy to share more user information with local businesses, and it looks like it's already putting some of that data to use in a new app now that the policy has gone into effect. Launched today for the iPhone and iPod touch, Foursquare for Business is just that -- an app designed for business owners instead of customers. In addition to letting managers upload new photos and refresh their specials regularly, it'll also give them a peek into customer activity at their business (or businesses), including information on check-ins and the ability to keep an eye on their top customers. As Foursquare notes in its privacy policy, though, you can opt out of having that check-in information visible to businesses in the app's privacy settings.

SD senator seeks to get rid of alienation lawsuits

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) ? A South Dakota state senator had hoped a sensational trial that aired details of a prosecutor's romance would help him in his decade-long quest to get rid of a state law that allows people to seek financial damages from someone for stealing a spouse.

But the senator's effort suffered a major setback Tuesday, when a legislative committee voted to keep the law, which its supporters argue helps protect marriage by deterring attempts to seduce married people.

The South Dakota law is based on centuries-old British law. State Sen. Stan Adelstein, a Republican from Rapid City, says it treats a spouse as property and that only a half dozen other states still allow such lawsuits. Adelstein said he will continue to push his measure to repeal the law that allows alienation of affection lawsuits.

"The concept was that women were basically mindless and could be easily carried away by a handsome man or an unhandsome man who was particularly articulate," Adelstein said. "It's really a ridiculous idea."

Adelstein had hoped his cause would be helped by a recent trial in Rapid City that attracted a lot of attention in South Dakota. Former county prosecutor Glenn Brenner was sued by his wife's ex-husband, businessman Douglas Rumpca, claiming Brenner stole Kellie Rumpca from a loving marriage. Douglas Rumpca sued Brenner in 2010 after his wife, Kellie, filed for divorce. Brenner married Kellie Rumpca in 2011.

Douglas Rumpca's lawsuit seeking $350,000 in damages from Brenner was ultimately unsuccessful, but not before details about Brenner's romance with Kellie Rumpca were revealed in court.

Adelstein said such lawsuits, although rare, particularly hurt the children of those involved in the legal disputes. He said the Brenners are moving to Texas because of the publicity, uprooting their children from their friends.

But Dale Bartscher of the South Dakota Family Heritage Alliance said the threat of an alienation of affection lawsuit can save marriages and deter someone from trying to seduce a married woman. He said he knows of one marriage that likely was saved when a husband learned his wife was having an affair and threatened to sue her lover.

"We simply say once two people are married in South Dakota, leave that marriage alone," Bartscher said.

Adelstein and Bartscher said Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Utah also still allow such lawsuits.

For decades, South Dakota law allowed a man to sue if another man seduced his wife, but not for a woman to sue a husband's lover. In 2002, the Legislature rejected Adelstein's attempt to repeal the law, but it changed it so a wife also could sue for alienation of affection.

Sen. Jim Bradford, a Democrat from Pine Ridge, said he supports getting rid of the law because such lawsuits are more about money than love.

"The whole idea isn't to bring the marriage back together. It's to get some money out of somebody," Bradford said.

But Sen. Mike Vehle, a Republican from Mitchell, said the law serves a purpose by warning people not to try to seduce someone else's spouse. Too many marriages now end in divorce, Vehle said.

"I'd hate to see us, by passing this, have South Dakota look like we are adding to that trend by saying it's OK to steal the affections of someone else and break up that family," Vehle said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 4-3 Tuesday to reject Adelstein's proposal. Adelstein said he may ask the full Senate to override the committee's decision and debate the bill.

Debris of F-16 missing in Italy believed found, search focuses on spot

RAVENNA, Italy (Reuters) - Italian Coast Guard divers searching for a missing American F-16 and its pilot were focusing on Tuesday on waters where a fishing boat found debris believed to belong to the jet, a Coast Guard official said.

The debris, including fragments of carbon steel, was found floating in the northern Adriatic overnight, Rear Admiral Francesco Saverio Ferrara said. The U.S. Air Force said in a statement on Tuesday it was thought to be wreckage from the missing aircraft.

"We hope to find out more during the day so we can have a more complete picture of what happened," Ferrara said.

The missing jet took off from Aviano Air Base on a training exercise on Monday evening, and the control tower lost contact with the plane at about 2 p.m. ET.

Search-and-rescue operations are being conducted by sea from the port of Ravenna, and Air Force planes from Aviano are spearheading the search from above, Ferrara said.

Snow and rain hampered the operation overnight, and on Tuesday fog was hampering visibility, the Coast Guard said.

Aviano is the base for the U.S. Air Force's 31st Fighter Wing. The Air Force said a board of officers would investigate the incident.

"Wing leadership remains hopeful that we will safely rescue our pilot," an Air Force statement said.

Are you looking for information on Internet marketing? We will now outline some tips that will help you understand things better.

Know your competition! This is true in Website marketing as well as any other business. Find out what steps they are taking and what is working and not working for them. Observation of the way others in your field are doing business can provide much valuable insight. Checking out competitors can help you avoid mistakes they?ve made and set yourself apart from them.

Make it easy for others to link their websites to yours by using a linking button. People who have a site that is related to your business in some way will often want to help out by using the add on their own site for their visitors to see.

TIP! Try and implement emotional descriptors in your ads as a means of selling more products. This helps you concentrate on building brand recognition.

For successful Internet promotion, you have to make the most of your website. There are many things you can do such as, changing up the color schemes and fonts, and just designing it in different ways that make the products stand out much better. Keep that in mind when you are building your site.

One of the best ways to ensure success with you business, would be to ?know your competition.? Figure out what they are doing and what?s working for them, and do the same thing, but better. If you are aware of what they are selling and know you can do something a bit better, then you can be very profitable and surpass them in sales. Another way to increase your profits is by offering your goods and services at a lower or comparable price to that of your competitors.

Promotions and sales can help to boost your PageRank. You can buy a page ranking if you have a good enough deal. This is essentially the same as the loss leader sales engaged in by many big brick and mortar stores.

TIP! Illustrate every product?s quality with crisp, clear photographs. A clear and crisp graphic of your product will be appreciated by your customers.

You can use organic methods to increase the visibility of your business and you can pay to advertise online. This can be done through companies like Google?s AdSense. You just need to do the work of creating the ad up front, and let them do the rest of the work for you with the sharing of your information with potential customers afterward.

Whenever you correspond online, include links to your business webpage in your signature. If you participate in forums, place a link to your site in the signature of your posts. Also, put your business link in your outgoing mail signature. This is a way to subtly advertise your website and could increase your ratings in search engines too. Above your link, make sure that there is an interesting line that will make them want to click it.

Try exploring mobile marketing. You can give your site visitors the opportunity to get text alerts when a special sale is going on or when a new product is launched. It is one of the newest ways of advertising and it is going to help you in your online marketing campaign.

TIP! Learn how to use your email to benefit your business. When you send emails to your customers, make it newsletter style and interesting.

You can read studies that been done on the psychological impact of web design and it?s effects on Online marketing. Psychology can play a part in the way someone looks at your site, depending on a lot of different factors. Knowing this information will prove very valuable towards increasing your profit margin.

You normally do not want to mix pleasure and business, but in this instance, you may want to. This is because it can be seen as a lucrative hobby and high-pressure in regards to work is not prevalent. Do this along with the help of your husband or wife.

TIP! Here is a tip for internet marketing! Make sure you know what you want your customers to do when they land on your site. The webpage is purely about sales; nothing more, nothing less.

In conclusion, we have provided you with some important factors regarding Internet promotion. Make the most of this information and apply it to your current strategy. Use this advice and find success with your Internet promotion efforts.

Nothing much happened today beyond the foreseeable ? Stocks fell, the silver and GOLD PRICE fell a little further, dollar was flat, and the other scabby fiat currencies as well.

Friday (25 January) I somehow posted the wrong closes for the Dow and S&P500. Correct closes were Dow 13895.98 (up 70.65) and S&P500 at 1,502.96 (up 8.14). I have no idea how that error crept in. Please forgive me.

The GOLD PRICE fell a little further, $3.70, to $1,652.90. Silver lost 42.4 cents to 3075.6.

Today gold's range touched the uptrend line from June '12 and the downtrend line from the November 12 high. In fact, it touched them exactly where they crossed.

Try to picture a falling wedge in your mind. Gold breaks out of that wedge about 2/3 of the way down, rallies to $1,698, then falls back, but (so far) only for a Kiss Back to the downtrend line it has just broken though upward.

Frustrating as this is, it doesn't point to a fall to the earth's core, but rather, another rise. Worst hand raised against that is gold's fall beneath its 200 day moving average on Friday. Needs to fix that quickly.

The SILVER PRICE chart looks much the same. However, silver hasn't kissed back all the way to that short term down trend line, and remains above its 200 DMA (3065c), but not by much. About 3045c tomorrow will lie the strong uptrend line from the June '12 low.

I was going back over some trades today from 2008 - 2009. I remember buying gold at $858 with my heart in my mouth in December. In May 2009 I was still nervous at 978.50, but bought anyway. And in November 2009, 17.098 silver looked awfully risky, but still I bought. Point is, markets always look risky, and exactly the right time to buy is the time your mind, body, and intestines will scream loudest. And sometimes, they're right.

Life comes with no guarantees, unless you are a slave.

Stocks dropped, the Dow at 13,881.93 down 14.05 (0.1%) and the S&P500 down 2.78 (0.18%) at 1,500.18. Only 4 or 5 times in the last 10 years have stocks been more highly oversold. They stand at their upper trendline resistance. They've sketched out a massive head and shoulders top that stretches back to 1996, and they've both lately reached the point of rising wedge formations.

Sure, maybe they can rise from here -- but don't bet on it.

Dollar, yen, and euro were all flat today. US dollar index closed 79.804, basically unchanged from Friday. Euro fell a miniscule 0.07% to $1.3450, while the yen rose 0.07% to 110.17 cents/Y100.

These gappy cahrts are hard to read. Euro gapped up on Friday, then traded in almost exactly the same range today, leaving a little isolated island up there. Must fill in that gap or advance sharply or it runs the risk of breaking down.

Be certain the world's big central bankers are furious with the Japanese and their competitive devaluation. They don't know much, but they remember the currency wars of the 1930s and would like to avoid them.

I found out something unusual about my new book, At Home in Dogwood Mudhole. People keep writing me that they're reading the book outloud with wife or husband, or reading it to their children. One of my sons has been reading it to his two boys, Gus (6) and Felix (4). Thinking, I reckon, on something he had heard at school, he stopped my son Christian while he was reading and asked, "Dad, were Mama Sue and Big Daddy alive in colonial times?" I didn't know we looked THAT old.

Y'all can still get copies of AHIDM at www.dogwoodmudhole.com.

To avoid confusion, please remember that the comments above have a very short time horizon. Always invest with the primary trend. Gold's primary trend is up, targeting at least $3,130.00; silver's primary is up targeting 16:1 gold/silver ratio or $195.66; stocks' primary trend is down, targeting Dow under 2,900 and worth only one ounce of gold; US$ or US$-denominated assets, primary trend down; real estate bubble has burst, primary trend down.

WARNING AND DISCLAIMER. Be advised and warned:

Do NOT use these commentaries to trade futures contracts. I don't intend them for that or write them with that short term trading outlook. I write them for long-term investors in physical metals. Take them as entertainment, but not as a timing service for futures.

NOR do I recommend investing in gold or silver Exchange Trade Funds (ETFs). Those are NOT physical metal and I fear one day one or another may go up in smoke. Unless you can breathe smoke, stay away. Call me paranoid, but the surviving rabbit is wary of traps.

NOR do I recommend trading futures options or other leveraged paper gold and silver products. These are not for the inexperienced.

NOR do I recommend buying gold and silver on margin or with debt.

What DO I recommend? Physical gold and silver coins and bars in your own hands.

One final warning: NEVER insert a 747 Jumbo Jet up your nose. No, I don't.

Russian court postpones hearing in whistleblower's case

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Moscow court postponed a preliminary hearing on Monday in the posthumous trial of whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky, whose death in custody has damaged Russia's image and strained ties with the United States.

The court appointed a legal team to defend Magnitsky during the trial after his family and lawyers refused to attend Monday's hearing because they say the case is politically motivated.

Magnitsky was 37 when he died after 358 days in jail on suspicion of tax evasion and fraud, during which he said he was denied treatment as his health declined.

"Today's preliminary court hearing was moved to February 18 ... because Magnitsky's defence team did not show up. And the judge, in order to observe the principle of equality (before the law), appointed a defense," said court spokeswoman Alexandra Berezina.

Russian authorities said Magnitsky died of a heart attack. But his former employer, investment fund Hermitage Capital, says he was killed because he was investigating a $230 million theft by law enforcement and tax officials.

DC Ranch Tennis Lessons | North Scottsdale Real Estate

Tennis DC Ranch

Ever wonder why you don?t hear a lot about tennis in Scottsdale, Az? Scottsdale, being so famous for golf and the Phoenix Open, is not often thought of as the perfect place to live if your passion is tennis.

An all-year sport, tennis has really gained popularity with not only the country club set, but also a recreation and club sport for kids and teens.

In fact, it?s the ?country club sports? that have gained popularity in general as very competitive year-round sports. We still have plenty of football, baseball, soccer and basketball. But swimming, golf, tennis have gained huge momentum as competitive club sports seem to trump recreational these days. I?ll also put Lacrosse in this category, although not a country club sport, it definitely doesn?t have a generations old history in the West.

I?m ecstatic that my football loving son, has turned tennis into his new sport of choice. People who have played tennis as kids have such an advantage over me, who played softball/soccer as a kid, and is just now learning tennis as a 40-year-old creaker. Even if they have not played since they were a teenager, their muscle memory may have faded but not gone away. I?m reminded of this also when I pull out the old bike to head out for a ride with the kids.

Learning tennis here, however has been a very easy process. Lessons through Scottsdale Parks and Recreation are offered through many community and public parks. For tennis in DC Ranch, The Country Club at DC Ranch offers a tennis club, or Click Here for private instruction in DC Ranch and Windgate Ranch.

Following is a list of other public and private opportunities to play tennis near DC Ranch:

West Seattle family to participate in Puget Sound Energy home ...

West Seattle resident Kristen Corning Bedford, pictured here with husband Slade and their children, will participate in Puget Sound Energy's Re-Energized by Design home makeover competition.

Information from Puget Sound Energy

Six PSE customers sharpen their competitive design skills to rumble in an energy-efficient room makeover competition

On Jan. 24 Puget Sound Energy introduced the six contestants for Re-Energized by Design, a design competition in which PSE customers will compete weekly in a series of energy efficiency room makeover challenges. Prizes include light emitting diode (LED) and compact fluorescent light (CFL) lighting from GE, and a full laundry and kitchen appliance suite by Frigidaire. The last contestant standing will win $5,000.

?The stakes are high so we know the competition will be intense,? said Dennis Rominger energy efficiency expert at PSE. ?These six contestants are ready to compete head to head. Sweat will be shed, winners will be crowned and most importantly, we will see creative ways to bring great design and energy efficiency together.?

The six contestants who will compete in Re-Energized by Design rose to the top during an intense selection process, including submitting videos or photo entries, a public vote to select 10 finalists, and final interviews. During the process, each entrant was evaluated on a variety of factors, including the originality and creativity of their entry, their understanding and enthusiasm for design and energy efficiency, and the energy savings potential of their home.

Each Re-Energized by Design contestant brings unique skills to the competition, including West Seattle resident Kristen Corning Bedford.

No challenge is too big for Kristen. She and her husband, Slade, purchased their home from hoarders, moving in with a two-year-old with another child on the way. They have spent the last two years working to make it their dream home.

Slade and Kristen grew up in the Northwest and are proud to call West Seattle home. Together they like to dream of creating things, including how to constantly fix up their home.

?A home should tell a story about the people who live there," Corning Bedford said. "I have a good eye for design and have been creating a vision for the spaces in this home for nearly two years. The work for this contest is the work I've been looking forward to since the day we moved in: bringing better light and color to the space.?

Each contestant?s efforts will be supported by a dedicated design coach who will provide style guidance and encouragement.

Re-Energized by Design contestants will participate in five room makeover projects. After each makeover challenge, local society and events photographer Duell Fisher, 425 and South Sound Magazine editor Lisa Patterson and radio personality Marty Riemer will review and score each contestant?s effort. The lowest-scoring contestant in each round will be eliminated.

Online ?webisodes? that get up close and personal with each contestant as they make their homes more beautiful and energy efficient will begin airing weekly in March, at www.ReEnergizedbyDesign.com. Until then customers can follow Re-Energize on Facebook at Facebook.com/Re-Energize for energy efficient design tips, special product promotions, and to learn more about contestants.

'Fruitvale,' 'Blood Brothers' win at Sundance

By Reuters

PARK CITY, Utah -- Drama film "Fruitvale" and documentary "Blood Brothers" won the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, giving them a big boost to reach independent movie audiences this year.

George Frey / EPA

Director Ryan Coogler wins the audience award for dramatic film for "Fruitvale" at the awards ceremony at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 26.

"Fruitvale," starring Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan and directed by 26-year-old, first-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler," picked up the U.S. drama jury and audience awards for its "moral and social urgency."

The film is based on the true story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in Oakland, Calif., on New Year's Eve in 2008 and whose death sparked riots against police brutality. Movie studio The Weinstein Company purchased distribution rights for the film.

"This film had a profound impact on the audience that saw it ... this award goes out to my home in the Bay Area where Oscar Grant breathed, slept, loved, had fun and survived for 22 years," Coogler said in his acceptance speech.

Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim awarded the U.S. documentary jury prize to "Blood Brothers," saying it shook the voting panel to their core.

The documentary follows an American man who moves to Africa and works with children suffering from HIV at an orphanage, and through his work, the children gain a voice.

George Frey / EPA

Director Steve Hoover accepts the award for best documentary for the film "Blood Brothers" at the Sundance Film Festival.

"It is so encouraging for the kids ... their lives are so encouraging, and they die and no one remembers their name ... To take their story so that everyone sees it, it's so awesome," director Steve Hoover said."

Young actress Shailene Woodley, praised for her performance in "The Descendants" last year, and her co-star Miles Teller won the Special Jury acting prize in "The Spectacular Now."

Actress Lake Bell, who made her directorial debut in the U.S. drama category with quirky comedy "In A World," picked up the drama screenwriting award.

Hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who premiered his raunchy directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" this year, the Sundance Film Festival Awards pick winners at the top gathering for independent movies made outside of Hollywood's major studios.

"Sundance is a community of people of filmmakers and film lovers who all believe together that there's more to movies than glitz and glamour and money and the box office. In Hollywood, you can feel like a freak if you talk about movies as art, and here, you don't have that," Gordon-Levitt said.

World cinema winners
The Sundance Film Festival, now in its 35th year, is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute. The 10-day gathering of the independent film industry is held in snowy Park City, Utah.

In previous years, films that win the top prizes at the Sundance Film Festival often go on to achieve Hollywood awards success as well.

Last year, mythological drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the top prize at Sundance and is now nominated for four Oscars in major categories.

The award winners are voted for by special juries of industry professionals and by the audience for the audience favorite awards.

Victoria Will / AP

In the world cinema categories, South Korean drama "Jiseul" picked up the grand jury drama prize. The film, directed by Muel O, follows the residents of a small town who were forced to hide in a cave for 60 days after the military attacked their village.

Cambodian documentary "A River Changes Course," about three young Cambodians struggling with adversity in a country ravaged by war and debt, picked up the world cinema grand jury award.

"Events like these really bring our communities together to share in the beauty of the world and the beauty of our future," director Kalyanee Mam said.

"Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer," which follows the story of three members of a Russian feminist punk band jailed for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian Orthodox church, picked up special jury prize in the world documentary category.

Co-director Mike Lerner said the three members of the band had "started a feminist revolution that we hope will continue around the world."

IELTS Advice: answer the question! - ielts-simon.com

In the IELTS speaking and writing tests, the most important thing is to answer the question. This seems obvious, but many students are so worried about using 'difficult grammar' that they don't give relevant answers.

In the speaking test, listen carefully to the question and answer it as if you were speaking to a friend. Try to speak without thinking too much; forget the grammar and just have a normal conversation.

In the writing test, take some time to understand each question and plan your answer. Check the question every time you write a new idea; make sure that everything you write is relevant. If part of your answer is not related to the topic you will lose marks, even if your grammar is perfect.

Purported Relativity Paradox Resolved

Science is alive and well in at least the Physics community. Whilst I won't even pretend to understand General Relativity, the questioning of it and discussion about those questions is the true essence of science.

Sigh. General Relativity was not even at question here. Perhaps commenting on Slashdot should require a minimum amount of knowing what one is talking about. AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. Sigh.

At any rate, electrical engineers tend to view parts of Special Relativity in isolation. That makes them easier to handle and "visualize" in some respects, but much harder to deal with interactions. Minkovsky vectors and tensors are what theoretical physicists use instead, grouping several codependent field parts i

(AP) ? Fox News Channel is parting ways with former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, ending her three-year tenure as a contributor on the network.

While Palin's time at Fox was occasionally rocky, the network's news executive, Bill Shine, said Friday that "we have thoroughly enjoyed our association" with her.

"We wish her the best in her future endeavors," said Shine, Fox's executive vice president for programming.

A person familiar with discussions between Fox and Palin described the parting as amicable, saying that Fox and Palin had discussed renewing her contract but she decided to do other things. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Palin's lawyer in Alaska, John Tiemessen, had no immediate comment on her exit. Palin's last appearance on Fox News was Dec. 19 on Greta Van Susteren's show.

Palin signed to deliver commentary on Fox in January 2010, reportedly for $1 million a year. It was a coup for both sides at the time; the former Alaska governor was a little more than a year removed from her attention-getting run for the vice presidency and was considered one of the leading contenders for the 2012 presidential nomination. At Fox, she had a platform on the most popular network for conservative viewers. Fox installed equipment in Palin's Wasilla, Alaska, home to make her regular appearances easier.

But there were some indications of tension between her and Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes, who was quoted in a 2011 story by The Associated Press saying, "I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings."

When Palin announced she would not be a candidate in 2012, she said it on a conservative radio show, which didn't sit well with the company paying her to be a contributor. Palin took to her Facebook page late last summer to complain that Fox had cancelled her appearances one night at the GOP national convention; Fox said it was simply because the GOP had to condense its speaker schedule due to a hurricane.

Four years removed from her vice presidential candidacy, Palin's influence had waned and she was somewhat overshadowed as a contributor at Fox by Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush's top political aide. Rove recently renewed his contract at Fox through the 2016 election.

With four more years of a Barack Obama administration in power, Fox recently hired former Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich as a contributor.

Top white-collar crime prosecutor getting SEC job

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will nominate former U.S. attorney Mary Jo White, who built a reputation prosecuting white-collar crimes, to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission, an agency that has a central role in implementing Wall Street reform.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama would announce White's nomination during a ceremony in the State Dining Room Thursday afternoon.

"She's got an incredibly impressive resume," Carney said. "The president is very pleased to be able to nominate her."

At the same event, Obama will renominate Richard Cordray to serve as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a White House official said. The president used a recess appointment last year to circumvent Congress and install Cordray as head of the bureau. That appointment expires at the end of this year.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the nomination before the president announces it.

White spent nearly a decade as the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, handling a wide array of white-collar crimes and complex securities and financial fraud cases. White House officials say that experience makes her well-positioned to implement Obama's Wall Street reform legislation.

While serving as U.S. attorney, White also won convictions related to the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

If confirmed by the Senate, White would take over the helm at the SEC from Elisse Walter, who is serving out the rest of former SEC chairwoman Mary Schapiro's term. Schapiro resigned in December.

In 2000, White led the criminal prosecution of more than 100 people ? including members of all five New York crime families ? accused of strong-arming brokers and manipulating prices of penny stocks. The action was called one of the biggest crackdowns on securities fraud in U.S. history at the time.

White's office also won a record $606 million in restitution from the securities arm of the Republic New York Corp. bank in 2001. That year, the bank pleaded guilty to conspiring with an investment adviser to hide hundreds of millions of dollars in losses from Japanese investors.

Cordray has run the consumer bureau since last year, when Obama used a recess appointment to install him in the job. Senate Republicans had opposed Cordray, as well as the concept of the consumer bureau.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., first conceived of the idea of a consumer protection bureau. Obama considered naming her to lead the bureau, but her nomination would likely have run into deep opposition on Capitol Hill.

White, 65, currently heads the litigation department at law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.

She was the first woman to hold the position of U.S. attorney in Manhattan, one of the most prestigious positions in federal law enforcement. During her tenure from 1993 to 2002, White won convictions of white-collar criminals, drug traffickers and international terrorists. The most notable was Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

She also led the prosecution of mob boss John Gotti when she was acting U.S. attorney in Brooklyn in 1992. Gotti died in prison in 2002.

If confirmed by the Senate, White would be the first prosecutor to head the 79-year-old SEC. Most SEC chairmen traditionally have come from Wall Street or the ranks of private securities lawyers. The choice of White is likely intended to bolster the agency's enforcement profile in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

White's background differs sharply from that of Schapiro, who stepped down last month after guiding the agency in the four years after the crisis. Schapiro worked at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the securities industry's self-policing organization. Some consumer advocates have said that Schapiro's experience as CEO of FINRA made her more likely to seek compromise and less likely to aggressively pursue misconduct.

During Shapiro's tenure, the SEC reached major settlements with the biggest banks on Wall Street, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Citibank. But critics said the penalties were small compared with the banks' revenues. And they complained that no senior executives were held accountable.

White would be expected to give high priority to expanding the enforcement efforts.

At the same time, much of the pressing work facing the agency involves writing new rules. The SEC is seeking stricter rules for money-market mutual funds and must get into shape the so-called Volcker Rule, which would bar banks from making certain trades for their own profit.

As head of litigators at Debevoise & Plimpton, White has represented a number of financial institutions likely to have crossed swords with the SEC in enforcement cases. Her clients also included former Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, whom she represented in a 2010 civil lawsuit by then-New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo accusing Lewis of misleading shareholders in the bank's merger with Merrill Lynch.

White also represented the largest U.S. hospital chain, HCA, in the insider-trading investigations by the SEC and the Justice Department of former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, whose family owned HCA. The investigations were closed in 2007 with no charges filed against Frist.

Successful Affiliate Marketers' Best Tips And Tricks | Samuel Levitz ...

Many people have made a bundle from internet marketing. Taking the time to research web marketing will improve your profits in the long run. This article will guide you into doing all you can for successful online marketing.

Consider promoting something popular instead of something that is not widely known. Some affiliate marketers will stay away from the popular categories because of the increased competition. The advantage of a popular sales niche, though, is that website visitors feel more comfortable buying a product that has already racked up plenty of online sales. You should remember that the popular niches have a buyer pool that is already primed for the products and connecting with them is the only challenge. Your priority is finding a way to distinguish yourself from the competition, no matter what niche you get into.

TIP! Always keep in mind that it?s better to implement a few tips from experts than to listen to every piece of advice that?s thrown at you. Initially, you will need to invest time without turning a profit.

When setting up affiliate links on your website, think of the peripherals. Get a water bottle that includes a strap so it can tag along with you easily.

Credibility and a professional appearance are important for your affiliate marketing business. When adding a link, be sure that it is subtle. If your marketing campaign is good, your customers will view you as something more than just an affiliate.

TIP! Offer screenshots of products that indicate favorable reviews from previous customers or users. If you are able to offer prospective buyers a wealth of information, you can increase the likelihood that they?ll choose to do business with you and send others your way.

If you sell products through internet marketing channels, use the products yourself if at all possible. You can demonstrate your product?s usefulness by submitting informational material and reviews to directories and blogs. Try getting on some related forums and posting about how much you?ve enjoyed the product. With every post you leave on the Internet, include your affiliate link to allow readers to follow your message to the point of sale.

Having the same prospects see your advertising from multiple sources is a good way to get their attention and start your marketing. Using more than one program gives your visitors a greater range of choices.

TIP! Getting a successful affiliate marketing effort off the ground can require an initial investment on your part. Re-invest part of your profit into your marketing campaigns for ad space on sites and services across the web.

Google Plus

Never resort to negative language throughout the entirety of your affiliate marketing campaign. Utilize positive messaging rather than phrases containing negative wording. G.

TIP! Be sure to stay on top of the most recent facts and developments affecting your industry, sector or niche. If you are behind the times in comparison to your competitors, people are more likely to patronize your competitors.

Google Plus is an avenue for new business ventures. Try to get involved with it now while it is still in its infancy. Share your username on Google Plus with your Facebook and Twitter followers by adding your Google Plus icon next to your site?s social media links. If you have excellent content, you will quickly have a lot of followers.

When you?re looking for an affiliate marketing program, sometimes going with the most popular product isn?t the best option. There are many high quality products that are not considered to be popular and vice versa. Fierce competition will likely go hand in hand with a very popular product. You might not turn a profit.

TIP! When choosing a tracking service, make sure it is one that is legitimate. When an affiliate calculates your sales earnings incorrectly, remember you are the one who will lose income.

An affiliate marketer should be honest about the business he is engaged in. Tell your site visitors what your affiliations are, and tell them what you want to accomplish with your site. If a customer gets the feeling that you are being dishonest describing your connection to the original retailer, they have the ability to purchase the product directly from the merchant.

In order to be a success in affiliate marketing you have to stay on top of what is current at all times. Take the time every few months to look at new programs your affiliates may be offering. To keep your website fresh and interesting, keep current on new marketing tools offered by your programs that will attract traffic to your site.

TIP! When first striking out in affiliate marketing, try to avoid overextending yourself. By learning along the way, you?ll have more of a chance to succeed.

You need to be advertising your product across a variety of media. Some customers will run across your ads online when searching. Other prospective customers would be more likely to browse through newsletters or catalogs. Other customers may respond well to coupons and discounts. If you advertise your product in several ways, your audience will be larger.

Review any referral programs offered by your affiliate marketing partners. Companies want their businesses to be further promoted, therefore they may offer additional money for referrals. This can be done by paying per referral or based on commission of any sales that come from that referral. If you are running a business that is in a new market, you should consider referring an affiliate marketing business.

TIP! This will make your website more accessible to a wider audience, including older people. Sometimes, using a bigger font can make people able to read about your products easier.

Affiliate Companies

Disclose to your readers whether or not you earn money when your site?s visitors buy from affiliates. Being honest with your customers is a great way to build long-lasting relationships with them. You?ll get more business from customers and affiliates by being honest and credible.

TIP! Take a step away from the typical pop-up ad to a pop-under. Many people also set their computers so that pop-ups are blocked, and if this is the case, they will never even notice your adds.

When deciding which affiliate companies you should partner with, favor those that provide resources and support. The majority of affiliate companies aren?t ignorant. They do a lot of research to find out what kind of marketing is most successful for converting customers. Successful companies share their information with affiliates in an effort to create customized marketing campaigns to sell products.

Make sure you understand how order tracking works with the affiliates that you have chosen. If you make a sale, but it is not concluded until later, you may miss earning the commission owed your affiliate ID. This is especially true if a customer speaks with you, and then makes the order by mail or by phone.

TIP! If you want to draw more potential customers to your site, try advertising a contest or a special prize. This method is a great way to create both new and return visitors, as it allows your site to be a topic of conversation.

Figuring out exactly which affiliate advertisements are effective takes time. Customers respond differently to advertising campaigns and planning media accordingly is very important. Your target audience should always be the driving force when you decide which products you wish to sell.

You may be surprised at the positive reaction you will receive when you are willing to be upfront about your use of affiliate marketing. Remember that honesty is always the best policy. Most users consider affiliate marketing to be a convenient means of shopping and will use these links the same as any other.

TIP! Once you start bringing in a good amount of money, it doesn?t hurt to ask the marketing program you joined for a higher payout. These programs want good employees so if you are doing a good job, it will not bother them to pay you a little more.

Search engines place a fairly high focus on social media websites. It is therefore important to find ways to incorporate social media if you want to succeed with internet marketing. They actually book market sites so that they can produce search results concerning social media greatly in mind. Almost all pages on the internet are not interconnected through social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter.

Give yourself goals to help with your affiliate marketing. You can have a program on your computer that tells you some of the things you need to do.

TIP! You should always include a deadline with your affiliate products so offers cannot go on forever. Whenever a potential buyer notices a time constraint with a particular product, they are more inclined to purchase it.

Internet Marketing

Trivia questions in banner ads will promote more frequent and prolonged visits to your site. Most visitors cannot abstain from clicking your lead banner. Give your customers a discount if they answered correctly.

TIP! If you want to boost product or service sales, make a special section just for affiliates. Presenting your affiliates professionally and positively will convince other affiliates to join you.

You may want to offer your customers the opportunity to become part of your internet marketing network. When someone believes in what you are selling enough to buy it, chances are they can also help you sell it. Converting a customer into an affiliate can make you hundreds or even thousands more sales. This can cause a great increase in your profits and better your internet marketing.

Becoming successful in affiliate marketing means learning the best methods to promote your products. Some affiliates use whatever they can find for free. Some free methods are very good; however, do your homework to find out which ones really work well before you waste a lot of time and energy.

If you want to make a lot of money in your web marketing venture, go for companies that convert customers easily. Try to find a company that offers a conversion ratio of 1%.

Apply this information to your online marketing business. Many of these strategies and techniques were developed and honed over time by experienced affiliate marketers, so you and your company are certain to benefit from their knowledge and skill.

(AP) ? Stephen Curry banked in an off-balance shot while getting fouled by Russell Westbrook to start a three-point play, falling to his knees and shaking his shoulders to the sellout crowd.

Not quite the shimmy Mark Jackson displayed during his playing days ? still plenty good enough to please the Golden State coach.

Curry had 31 points and seven assists, and the Warriors punctuated the season's midpoint by outlasting the NBA-best Oklahoma City Thunder 104-99 in style Wednesday night.

"The way he's playing," Jackson said, "dance all you want."

On the eve of the announcement for All-Star reserves, Golden State's top two candidates made a lasting impression.

Curry matched Kevin Durant's spectacular scores all game, stole a pass from the Thunder's leading man in the final seconds and hit a pair of free throws to seal the Warriors' third straight victory. David Lee had 22 points and 12 rebounds, helped Golden State outrebound Oklahoma City's lengthy frontline 40-39 and made some big plays late.

The Warriors, with one playoff appearance since 1994, are 26-15 and own the fifth-best record in the Western Conference with another 41 games to play.

"I'm sure we're surprising people," Curry said.

Even Jackson, who doubles as a preacher, said he always had faith his team could win but "I get my praise and worship on because I didn't think it'd be this good," especially with center Andrew Bogut still sidelined indefinitely while recovering from left ankle surgery.

Durant had 33 points, nine assists and five rebounds, and Kevin Martin scored 16 points for the Thunder, who blew an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter a night after running away with a win at the Los Angeles Clippers. Oklahoma City (33-10) had won seven of eight but still remains at the top of the NBA standings.

"We could have been much better defensively," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "They made a lot of plays inside the paint but they got a lot of points off of our turnovers, too. We didn't make enough plays down the stretch and they did. They deserved to win this game."

Once again, the Warriors showed they're no fluke out West this season.

Lee found Carl Landry slicing through the lane for a dunk, Klay Thompson hit a running hook as part of his 19 points and Landry put back his own miss to give Golden State a 97-94 lead with 2:25 remaining.

Kendrick Perkins tipped in a rebound on the other end before Jarrett Jack swished in a high-arching shot over Durant near the top of the key to put the Warriors ahead by three again. Durant answered back with a pair of free throws, only to watch Lee's layup extend Golden State's lead once more.

Durant hit one of two free throws to slice Golden State's lead to 101-99, then Curry missed an open 3-pointer to give the Thunder a chance with 17.5 seconds to play.

Durant caught the inbounds pass on the right side and tried to slip a quick pass to Perkins in the paint. Instead, Curry intercepted and was fouled, making both free throws to put the Warriors ahead by four with 12.4 seconds left.

"The design was to get me a shot coming off toward the corner but they had two on the ball and they left Perk," Durant said. "I've just got to make a better read. I thought he was going to dive. I've got to hold onto that ball. That's all on me. I can't put Perk in that position."

Curry also outplayed Westbrook, who is likely headed for an All-Star selection. Westbrook had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 3 of 16 from the floor, including 0 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Golden State hasn't had an All-Star since Latrell Sprewell in 1997. That drought might end Thursday when the NBA announces the reserves, who are voted on by coaches.

"He had my vote," Brooks said of Curry.

Even with all of Oklahoma City's length and quickness, Curry often made the game seem like his own layup line.

He sliced and shook through the lane to convert three straight layups, capping the brief burst with a no-look reverse off his left hand. The Warriors were outshot 60 to 47 percent in the first quarter, though they still led 27-26 in large part because of six turnovers by Oklahoma City.

Durant stayed on the offensive and pushed the pace. He got past Landry for an uncontested dunk after the Warriors forward tweaked his ankle preparing to defend Durant, who also made a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws during a 10-3 run that put the Thunder ahead 45-38 midway through the second quarter.

Durant and Curry continued to dazzle in the second half, each with a spectacular score on one end only to have the other come back even stronger. At one point, the 6-foot-9 Durant covered the diminutive point guard, chasing him around screens all over the perimeter.

No matter.

Curry kept on coming and so did the Warriors, who went up 72-68 on his three-point play, which Curry celebrated with a shimmy similar to the one Jackson often showcased as an NBA point guard. Curry said he hadn't practiced the move, nor could he recall exactly what he did in the moment.

"It's truly genuine," he said.

So might be Golden State's play this season.

NOTES: The Warriors are the only team to beat the Thunder, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers this season. ... Oklahoma City is 6-3 on the second night of back-to-back games this season. ... The Thunder are 2-2 on their season-long six-game trip.
