Washington basketball picks apart the Eagles

You can take Alec Peters out of the Washington Panthers offense, but you can?t take the defense out of the Washington Panthers.

With four of the 46 fouls called Friday night attached to his name, Peters watched from the bench for a good part of the second half as Washington focused on what it does best to shut down Mid-Illini Conference foe Dunlap 58-32 at the Panther Den.

?That?s really what Washington basketball really is, it?s hard defense. Hard-nosed, tough? said Washington senior forward Troy Adams. ?That?s what Coach Brown has been coaching the last so many years.?

Peters, though, was the top cat in the first half, making all seven of his field goal attempts in scoring 22 points to help Washington (6-0, 2-0) to a quick 8-0 lead and a 33-25 halftime lead.

But the area?s best big man picked up two fouls early in the third quarter and had to sit the final 5:52 of the frame on the Panthers? bench.

Peters? teammates had his back.

The Panthers held Dunlap (3-3, 0-2) without a field goal in the third quarter while building 43-27 lead.

All nine third-quarter points for Washington came from Adams.

?Troy is a legitimate second scorer for us,? Washington coach Kevin Brown said. ?We moved him into Alec?s position and that actually worked out well because Alec was a little dinged up ... the whole week of practice was about building depth.?

There was no letup in the fourth. Dunlap did not score a second-half field goal until Alex Sorenson converted with 5:12 left to play. Meanwhile, Washington built a 48-27 lead prior to Sorenson?s hoop.

Washington followed with six straight points, including four free throws by Peters who finished the night with a game-high 26.

?We just had a lot of trouble scoring in the second half,? said Dunlap coach Jeff Barker. ?I didn?t fell we ran our screens and cuts as well as we should have, and we worked on it hard all week because we knew (Washington) is a great defensive team.?

Dunlap trailed 19-10 after a quarter and pulled within 19-13 at 7:27 of the second quarter. Washington then responded with an 11-0 run with Peters responsible for eight of those 11.

Washington went 17-of-29 from the field; Dunlap 10-of-31. Brett Renner led Dunlap with nine points.
