Monti wants Italian football halted for 2-3 years

ROME (AP) -Premier Mario Monti suggested Tuesday that Italian football should be suspended for two to three years after the latest match-fixing scandal rocked the national team and tarnished the image of the domestic game yet again just a week before the start of the European Championship.

Dawn raids on Monday resulted in 14 arrests - including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri - to bring the total number of suspects arrested in the match-fixing probe to about 50 since last year. Many more have been placed under investigation.

"Football should be stopped for two to three years," Monti said on Tuesday in a powerful message to Italy's football authorities on the need to clean up the game. "It is not a proposal by the government but a question I am asking as someone who was passionate when football was still football."

Monti made the comments while standing beside the prime minister of Poland, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine starting June 8.

"I'm not making a proposal, and even less is it a proposal that comes from the government, but it's a desire that sometimes I feel inside me: that it would really benefit the maturity of us Italian citizens if this game was completely suspended for two to three years," he said.

He also ruled out the use of public money to bail out football teams in difficulty.

Police swept through the Italian national squad's training camp near Florence on Monday as part of the operation and Italy defender Domenico Criscito was left out of the Euro 2012 squad after he was placed under investigation.

Antonio Conte, who coached Juventus to the Serie A title this term, was also officially notified that he is under investigation for alleged wrongdoing while in charge of Siena in 2010-2011.

Apart from those arrested Monday, three people have been placed under house arrest and two others are to present themselves to authorities. Five of the arrests were made in Hungary.

Numerous others have had their houses searched, including Chievo Verona striker Sergio Pellissier as well as Conte and Criscito.

The investigation was started by judicial authorities in Cremona last year. It has resulted in former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni being banned from football for three and a half years, and the arrest of former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori.

Serie A clubs Atalanta, Novara and Siena were among the 22 Italian teams notified at the beginning of this month that they are being investigated by sports authorities.

Prosecutors in Cremona have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America that was allegedly in operation for more than 10 years.

Italy has only recently recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal - known as Calciopoli - that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season, plus points penalties for several other Serie A teams and lengthy bans for club and refereeing officials.

The Italian national team reacted in the best possible way, winning the World Cup later that year.

Moms Away Retreat ? a relaxing weekend | Rowan Family Tree

Massages, chocolate, delicious meals, a wine tasting, dancing in the living room, crying on each other shoulders, deep discussions about children, light discussions about everything else, and jokes about the pool boy? These were all part of our retreat this weekend.

This past weekend I joined 16 other mothers to retreat and relax and rejuvenate. We met at Silver Star mountain, at a huge house tucked away on a hillside. The purpose of our retreat was to be with other mothers who have adopted children, to relax and rejuvenate, and to refresh ourselves for the work of being an adoptive mother.

Between the 17 of us, we have 73 children. Of course, I am a light weight in this crowd. ?Only two kids? That?s easy compared to some of my peers. Some of some of the ladies have eight, nine, 11 children. Lots of the mothers deal with issues typical to adoption such as attachment and birth family issues. But there are so many special needs children represented and some of those women facing bigger challenges than I do really appreciated being able to talk to other mothers with the same challenges.

Myself, I got a lot out of the weekend. First of all, I did not bring anything except for my cell phone, and my parents blissfully did not call me. So I got a nice break from work and technology. ?But I also got a chance to learn from some very experienced mothers and really accomplished women. ?I picked up some ideas for the future as the children grow and also got to share some of the successes that we have had. These successes, you don?t even realize until you share them as an example for someone else.

Mostly, I met really nice ladies. ?Some of these women I had met before adoption camping trip in Fintry. But at that camp I was sort of the odd woman out. Most of the women from Vernon all knew each other and I felt a lot like an outsider. But this retreat was a mixture of women from Vernon, Williams Lake, Kelowna, Liloet, Oregon and other places? and I fit right in.

You know, overall I have a pretty easy time with my girls. We don?t have any trauma issues? We have had some attachment challenges but those were quite minor compared to what other people face. We also don?t have any special needs in our family so far and the girls are overall bright, easy to deal with, and very easy to care?for children. I guess when I sit and listen to the stories from women such as these, I realize that the challenges that we face in our family?are related to the juggles that we have to do.

I think the main family challenges we face are related to all the things going on in our lives: starting a business, both parents working full-time, children being active in clubs, volunteering for various charities and having an active group in of fmaily and friends. Really our challenge is that we have full and rich lives. Even though I don?t sleep very much most nights, we truly are blessed with the richness. That?s not to say that the families I met are not the same? I guess I am just putting?our challenges in the perspective that most of our challenges are not adoption-related and?more related to?our lifestyle.

Anyway I?had a rejuvenating, relaxing time. Jason comes home tonight for two days and that he will be off again for two weeks. Thank goodness my parents have been helping me out and took care of the children this weekend. And thank goodness that Jason is going to take the girls to Creston for the second week of his?next visit!

Thanks for a lovely time moms, and thanks to my mom and dad for taking care of my kids. I will be back next year. And I will host a wine tasting?again!

PS: I am using voice recognition software to type my posts now, so forgive the wierd errors as I train-up my phone!!

European Microstates: Liechtenstein | Online Business Article ...

?

Liechtenstein is widely known as one of the smallest countries in the world. The size of Liechtenstein is smaller than most Caribbean islands or archipelagoes of Micronesia. However, this tiny principality between Switzerland and Austria has three different geographical areas with distinct nature and topography.

Tourists will find here the fertile Rhine valley in the west, the edge of the Tyrolean Alps in the south-east, and northern lowlands. More than one fifth of the country is covered with forests, and the remaining area is very carefully used as pastures for cattle, or for growing vegetables, grapes, wheat, etc. As soon as you arrive in the country you feel like you are visiting the medieval Europe.

The capital and most populated areas are located in the Rhine Valley near the border with Switzerland. The architecture of the country is very picturesque and largely differs by area. Most buildings have peaked red-tile roofs with wide overhanging eaves, balconies and verandas with forged metal bars and beautiful flowers.

The mountains of Liechtenstein are perfect for skiing and walking, climbing and other vigorous sports. Liechtenstein is a recognized center of winter recreation, especially skiing, as well as the recognized center of paragliding.

Vaduz, Liechtenstein?s capital contains most interesting sights and landmarks of the country. A beautiful view of the Konstanz Lake with its grayish-blue waters draws the tourists, and the prince?s castle of the 9th century, which is one of the main attractions of this amazing tiny country, makes their hearts beat faster. The Gothic chapel of the 15th century, the National Museum with a fine collection of coins, weapons, and exhibits of folklore, and a unique Museum of Stamps make recreation in Liechtenstein more meaningful. Downtown streets are amazing due to numerous objects of historical importance within this small area. The State Art Collection has good exhibitions of historical and artistic items. For ski fans, there is a special Ski Museum, open only in the afternoon.

Triesenberg quarter offers a superb view over the Rhine Valley and is famous for its beautiful domed church and a museum of ethnic communes. Village Malbyun is the main ski resort in the country, situated between the mountain ranges in the south-eastern part of the country. In addition to two world-class ski schools, Malbyun has good slopes for beginners and more advanced skiers.

Feldkirch is ?the gateway to Liechtenstein? on the Austrian side of the border. The city has almost intact medieval buildings, a wonderful panorama from the Shattenburg castle walls, a small but very interesting historical museum. One of the main attractions of the city is a tiny zoo, where the animals are kept roaming free, with almost no walls and bars. Feldkirch is also famous throughout Europe for its music festival at the end of June, and in winter the surrounding slopes and ski centers will bring you as much pleasure as the most prestigious resorts in Europe.

When in Liechtenstein, many tourists often visit neighboring Appenzell, though it is technically located in Switzerland. The city itself is very beautiful and has a lot of traditional old buildings, scenic surroundings and splendid countryside. The streets are decorated with national flags and flowers, and the locals are often seen wearing traditional dresses.

Liechtenstein is also acknowledged as an important center of spa resorts which should be taken into consideration when planning a vacation here.

Despite the medieval look and feel, Liechtenstein tour operators, thought few in numbers, are very modern and efficient. Travel agents for Liechtenstein can suggest how to include the neighbouring countries in a small but outstanding vacation package.

Roadside bombs kill 4 NATO troops in Afghanistan

Four NATO service members were killed in separate roadside bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said Sunday.

NATO said in a statement that all four deaths occurred Saturday. It provided no other details on the attacks, including the nationalities of the service members.

One is thought to be a British soldier killed Saturday in an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj region of southern Helmand province. The British Ministry of Defence announced late Saturday that the soldier died while travelling in a vehicle.

More related to this story

Another NATO service member died Friday in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan. No details have been given on that death.

Their deaths bring to 33 the number of NATO service members killed so far this month in Afghanistan, for a total of 165 this year. A total of 414 members of British forces have died since operations in Afghanistan began more than 10 years ago.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior also announced Sunday that six insurgents were killed Saturday in joint operations in four eastern provinces. Another three were killed when the roadside bombs they were trying to plant detonated in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

Facebook Aside, Everyone Who Thinks IPO "Pops ... - Business Insider

Scott Olson / Getty Images

Unlike most CEOs, who have been brainwashed by bankers, he knew exactly what he was doing.

Last Friday, after Facebook stock started trading at $42, most observers immediately pronounced the IPO a flop.

Why?

Because the IPO had been priced at $38, which meant that the IPO "pop" was only about 10% above the IPO price.

Facebook stockholders who had bought the IPO the night before had instantly made 10% overnight--a spectacular return. String together a few months of daily returns like that, and you would quickly be one of the most successful investors in history.

But some Facebook speculators had expected to make much more free money overnight--perhaps as much as speculators in LinkedIn and other hot IPOs had made.

So they felt disappointed and ripped off.

And the media, who have been carefully trained by Wall Street and short-term speculators to view IPOs with big pops as "successful" and IPOs with small or no pops as "flops" immediately dissed Facebook as a flop.

Now, there were two serious issues with the Facebook IPO that complicate any discussion focused on this IPO in particular: The NASDAQ screwup that borked at least a day's worth of trading, and the "selective disclosure" scandal, in which the underwriters told their big clients that Facebook's second quarter was weak but did not tell their small clients this.

Both of those issues may well have affected Facebook's first day of trading and contributed to the subsequent price decline. And both of those issues are legitimate sources of frustration, for investors and the company alike. (So please don't bother raising these issues in the comments below: They're separate and apart from the point of this discussion, which is about first-day "pops.")

According to a source very close to the situation, all other issues aside, Facebook was aiming for a 10% pop. Not a 25% pop. Not a 50% pop. A 10% pop. And for most of the first day of trading, that's exactly what Facebook got. In other words, Facebook did exactly what it was hoping to do.

Facebook knew well how this 10% pop would be perceived by the media: As a disappointment.

But Facebook understood what most companies that go public don't:

  • Any press grumbling about "disappointments" and "small pops" will be quickly forgotten.
  • The only investors who benefit from "pops" are short-term flippers who won't help the company long term and don't deserve free money
  • "Pops" cost the company and its existing shareholders hundreds of milions of dollars (in Facebook's case, billions)
  • "Pops provide no advantage to the company other than a bit of extremely expensive and ephemeral excitement and PR
  • Pricing the IPO high enough to have only a small pop meant raising millions or billions more dollars that would subsequently be worth milions or billions of dollars to the company

Specifically, in Facebook's case, if Facebook had priced the IPO at, say, $30, instead of $38, it would have raised ~$12.5 billion in the IPO instead of $16 billion.

In exchange for a bigger "pop," happier speculators, and a more enthusiastic press reception, in other words, Facebook and its selling shareholders would have sacrificed $3.5 billion that they can now use to create real value for the company and its shareholders (including its new shareholders).

$3.5 billion is real money.

AP/Android Police

Another CEO who understands the truth about IPO pops.

Blowing $3.5 billion on making speculators and financial reporters happier would have been the height of short-term thinking. And, like other great companies, Facebook doesn't make decisions aimed at creating short-term value. It makes decisions designed to create long-term value.

The extra $3.5 billion Facebook raised by aiming for 10% pop will create at least $3.45 billion more value for Facebook over the long term than a bigger "pop" would have. (The short-term press hyperventilation and speculator euphoria may create some value for a company, but not much. And it may even be harmful to the company by making everything after the IPO seem like an anti-climax.)

But, but, but!

What about the IPO investors?

Shouldn't Facebook and other IPO companies want to make investors happy?

Shouldn't they be less greedy and give investors a reward for taking a chance on them?

Yes.

IPOs should not be priced "at market value." They should be priced just below market value? This rewards initial investors for taking the chance on the IPO pricing (which is always risky--no one knows exactly what "market value" will be). And it gives the investors an incentive necessary to do the research on the company before it goes public. Without that, the investors might just wait to see where the stock traded and do the research then.

But any investor who thinks they need more than a 5%-10% overnight return as a reward for placing an order on the IPO is unbelievably greedy.

Again, a 10% return overnight is a spectacular return.

A 10%-20% return, which is what early-stage IPOs should aim for, is an even more spectacular return.

So any investor who thinks they deserve more than that is just greedy.

But What About "Broken IPOs" -- They're Terrible, Right? [No]

What if the "market value" for a company on the first day of trading is higher than a conservative market value that a conservative investor would place on it? What if the stock drops below the IPO price after the first couple days of trading? What if the company has a "broken IPO?"

Yes, what about that.

This is where Wall Street's brainwashing of clients and the media about IPOs has been most insidious and effective.

So, really, what if a company has a "broken IPO?" Isn't that a huge disaster?

No.

In fact, it's hardly worth mentioning.

What it means is that investors who placed orders for the IPO at certain prices and were intending to hold the stock for more than the first day of trading and were unwilling to tolerate a drop below the IPO price were too aggressive in their bids.

www.naismithhome.com

You're selling your house. Should you sell it at 25% or off just to create a "pop"? Of course not!

That's the investors' fault, not the company's fault. And the resulting disappointment and disgruntlement is called "buyers' remorse." And it happens all the time, in almost every industry and type of transaction on the planet.

Let's use a real-estate analogy.

Let's say a beautiful house is being put up for sale. The agent hired (and paid) to sell the house advertises it everywhere, so all potentially interested buyers know about it. Then the agent calls for bids. The agent explains that there will be only one round of bidding, so bidders need to submit their highest and best offers. Then the agent and the homeowner look at all the bids and pick one, probably the highest. And then the house is sold at that price.

The day after the deal, it is highly unlikely that the buyer would be able to resell the house for the price he or she just paid--because he or she offered the highest bid around. The true "market value" for the house, in other words--the average price paid by most buyers and sellers--might actually be below the price the buyer paid.

The seller of the house, meanwhile, has gotten full market value for the house--just as he or she should.

No one complains that there wasn't a "pop" in the house price.

No one thinks the buyer "got screwed."

No one says the agent should have sold the house at 25% below market value just to give the buyer a "pop."

In fact, if the buyer ever complains that he or she paid too much for the house, everyone will tell the buyer to grow up and look in the mirror if he or she wants to figure out who to blame.

And it's exactly the same for IPOs.

Any "pop" in the stock price on the first day is the difference between the IPO price and the market value.

The market value is not, perhaps, a "conservative value that only a cautious prudent investor would pay," but the market value--the average value that all investors, conservative and aggressive, are paying.

Any investor who chooses to pay market value for an IPO needs to accept that. And if he or she doesn't want to accept that, then he or she just shouldn't place a bid. (This is voluntary stock speculation, after all: We're not talking about selling water and air.)

"But It's Not Like Selling A House... It's Like Selling Apartments!" [No, It Isn't]

There's one more argument that sophisticated "pop" defenders invoke. And that's this:

Selling an IPO is not like selling a house. It's like selling an apartment in a big apartment building with lots of apartments. What you're trying to do with the first sale, the pop defenders say, is generate excitement for the stock, by showing how much money can be made if buyers start speculating on the apartments. If you give away a lot of free money to the first few buyers, this story goes, others will see how much money is being made and then they'll pile in and start buying. And the value of all the apartments will go up!

That argument sounds sophisticated and intelligent, but it's wrong.

Why?

Because the shares in an IPO are sold all at once, not one after the other.

And future sellers of shares in the company--existing shareholders--will not be selling any more shares for months after the deal, at which point the trading price of the stock will be determined by the first day "pop" on the IPO but by what has happened in the interim.

"No!" the IPO pop defenders shout.

"The first-day pop determines everything! Investors who don't get a pop will storm off in disgust, and they'll never come back! The company's stock price will be lower forever, because burned investors will always want to punish the company!"

I hope no one seriously believes this.

The reality is that after a stock settles in the weeks and months after the IPO, what happened on the first day of trading is quickly forgotten. Potential buyers and sellers of the stock react to "news"--to what is happening in the market and industry and at the company--not because of some collective market memory about the IPO price. And, in any event, even in a huge deal like Facebook, the investors who played the IPO are only a tiny fraction of all available investors out there, so even if the investors who didn't get their free-money pop remain disgruntled, plenty of other investors will rush in to fill the gap.

So, if IPOs pops are actually bad, why does everyone think they're so good?

A few reasons:

  • Everyone loves free money, so when a handful of speculators get lucky and make a lot of it (when an IPO is underpriced), they're very loud in celebrating their brilliance and success
  • Pops are exciting and controversial! Pops give the press an excuse to write breathless stories about the IPO, in which they can rave about the "instant overnight millionaires and billionaires" and the "popular madness and delusions of crowds" and other age-old stories that sell newspapers and cause viewers to tune in (and get clicks).
  • Wall Street has brainwashed companies and the media into thinking that pops are good. Why? Because a healthy "pop" makes it easier for Wall Street to keep both kinds of clients happy--not just the issuer (company) client but the investor clients. Wall Street deals with issuer clients only every once in a while, when companies do IPOs or secondary offerings. But Wall Street deals with investor clients every day. So Wall Street loves to dole out favors to those investor clients at the expense of issuer clients. And those favors often come in the form of huge IPO pops.?

What a small IPO pop like Facebook's really means is that the underwriter has correctly assessed market value (often hard to do) and then priced the stock just below market value. In other words, they've done a great job for their issuer client and a fine job for their investor clients. Especially on a hot offering, this is extremely hard to do. That's why I said last week that Morgan Stanley had priced Facebook perfectly.

You'll enjoy this tidbit about how Morgan Stanley decided which clients to give Facebook stock to... (click photo)

Yes, in the week since its IPO, Facebook has traded down sharply. But a lot of that sell-off is due to the NASDAQ screwup and the now-widespread understanding that Facebook is having a weak second quarter (something that was only known by institutions). And a lot of it is also probably due to the fact that many, many players placed orders for Facebook only because they were hoping to get a huge IPO pop.

These speculators--and that's what they are, speculators--did get a nice modest pop. Again, on the first day of trading, unless they were burned by the NASDAQ screwup, they could have sold their stock for 5%-10% more than they bought it for the day before--a spectacular return. And if this was still disappointing to them, well, then, that's because they were greedy.

Meanwhile, Facebook raised $16 billion at a good price, one that--at the time it priced the stock--was just below the market value.

The extra cash that Facebook raised by pricing its stock 10% below market instead of, say, 25%, will create value for the company for decades to come.

If the company executes well, meanwhile, memories of the "broken IPO" will quickly be forgotten.

And anyone who doesn't believe this should just take a look at Amazon.

Back in 1997, when Amazon went public, the stock quickly "broke" the IPO price.

As it was for much of its early history, Amazon was shellacked in the press for this.

15 years later, Amazon is up about 75X from the IPO price.*

And the shellacking has long since been forgotten.

SEE ALSO: EXCLUSIVE: Here's The Inside Story Of What Happened With The Facebook IPO

* No, I don't think Facebook is going to go up 75X from the IPO price. This is in part because Facebook went public at a far more mature stage than Amazon. When Amazon went public, it was valued at $500 million. When Facebook went public, it was valued at $104 billion. It's a lot harder to create oodles of future value from a $104 billion level than it is from a $500 million one.

The Best NYC Food Trucks: NY Food Truck Dessert: The Weekly ...

Perry, the voice behind New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City food trucks and carts.

One of the best dessert vendors in the city is Wafels & Dinges. ?In fact, they won Best Dessert at the 2009 Vendy Awards.

Even though we love their regular menu, we always have an eye out for their Weekly Special. ?They regularly come up with interesting and delicious creations.

When ordering any wafel, you first have to decide on either a Brussels or Liege wafel. ?The Brussels wafel is lighter and crispier. ?The Liege wafel is denser, sweeter and chewier.

More: NYC?s 5 Best Food Truck Desserts

One of our favorite Weekly Specials was the P-Nutty Professor, which cost $7 (photo above). ?I usually get the Liege wafel, and this one came?with creamy peanut butter, bananas, real Belgian cocoa sauce and confectioner?s sugar on top.? It was as good as it looks (and sounds).

As Elvis knew, bananas and peanut butter is a great combination ? and Belgian cocoa sauce takes it to another level.

This week?s special was the El Churro Wafel, which cost $6. ?If you?ve ever had a churro, this was a pretty great homage.

It was a wafel with dulce de leche and cinnamon sugar, which was liberally sprinkled all over. ?The only thing missing was thick hot chocolate to dip it into, as they do in Spain. ?It wasn?t as light and airy as a churro, but it was unbelievably delicious!

Wafels & Dinges has 2 trucks and 3 or 4 carts around the city every day. ?You can find their locations and the Weekly Special on Twitter here, their website here, or our Mobile Munchies Twitter feed.

10 great songs made with the Bob Moog Google Doodle

The latest Google Doodle, created to commemorate synthesizer inventor Bob Moog's birthday, allows users to play and record their own songs. Here's a list of the best we've listened to so far.

By Megan Riesz / May 23, 2012

Users can use a mouse to click each key and change the dials or opt for a keyboard instead.

Google?s first Doodle was an Impressionist sketch of the company?s logo, created by Dennis Hwang in 2004. Since then, Google has upped the ante by devising interactive Doodles that put visitors in charge.?

Users have previously been able to strum a Les Paul guitar and play a quick round of Pac-Man ? now, you can play and record songs via Bob Moog?s synthesizer.

Robert ?Bob? Moog sparked a musical movement that has been described as ?assertive, bouncy, exotically wheezy and occasionally explosive.?

In other words, he is the inventor of the synthesizer. His creation lent a hand to the explosion of musical genres such as disco and electronic music in the form of Donna Summer and the soundtrack from the futuristic Stanley Kubrick film, ?A Clockwork Orange.?

This latest Doodle has inspired musicians (and quite a few talented amateurs) to tinker with Google?s homage, which includes oscillators and filters and a 25-key keyboard. We?ve compiled a list of the best examples of songs posted on YouTube and Google+, ranging from movie theme songs to the work of a classical composer. To get started on a song of your own, see our guide to the Doodle.
?
1. "Summer" by Vanessa James
?
YouTube user?barabas89 got more than 11,000 hits for this take on composer Vanessa James? number. Barabas89 recorded separate parts of the song and layered them with some editing, culminating in a sophisticated example of what the Doodle can do.

?
2. "The Imperial March" from ?Star Wars?
?
It?s one of the most easily recognizable movie themes, even when played on a small keyboard. YouTube user?willdsgn put together a 20-second clip of the song most often associated with Darth Vader and the evil Empire.

?
3. ?"Happy Birthday"
?
Considering that the Doodle was made to celebrate Robert Moog?s birthday, a take on the ?Happy Birthday? song seems appropriate. YouTube user?EversonFreitas22 recorded a quick homage to Moog infused with the typical electronic vibrations of any synthesizer.

?
4. "Tetris"?theme
?
One of the most popular video game songs ever, the Tetris music is ingrained in the minds of GameBoy enthusiasts. YouTube user?joshntx compiled a 50-second version of the puzzle game?s upbeat theme song.

?
5. ?Canon in C"?by Johann Pachelbel
?
And some say classical music is dead. Despite Moog?s synthesizer being one of the most modern musical inventions to date, YouTube user?askymoon made a simple clip of one of the most famous orchestral pieces in history.

?
6. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" from ?The Lion King?
?
In one of the most beloved Disney movies, Simba and Nala sing a sweet love duet when they see each other for the first time in years. ?With music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice, the song won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Original Song ? and now, it?s come to Google?s latest Doodle.

(Listen to the recording here.)
?
7. "Main Title (The Godfather Waltz)"?from ?The Godfather?
?
Italian composer Nino Rota?s waltz arouses memories of watching the Corleone family sink themselves deeper and deeper into trouble in Francis Ford Coppola?s classic film series ? even with one listen of this synthesized recording.

(Listen to the recording here.)
?
8. ?Tubular Bells"?from ?The Exorcist?
?
YouTube user?lappingthesun?s approximation of one of the scariest film?s theme song is enough to send chills down your spine. ?When I played the song it was ok,? the video description reads, ?but then [i]t played back weird and different every time with the player so I found the best version of the riff and I [l]ooped it.?

?
9. "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
?
For budding musicians, this English lullaby is often one of the first songs to learn. For those experimenting with the latest hands-on Google Doodle, it?s an easy tune that has yielded a product worthy of praise (in YouTube user?CErixsson?s case).

?
10. "Hey Jude"?by The Beatles

Even without the voices of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, ?Hey Jude? is a model song. YouTube user?MattStottmann, who calls himself a ?manipulator of sound and creator of sonic texture? on his?Twitter, recorded a nearly three-minute take on one of the most famous songs to come out of The Beatles? 10-year existence.

Team In Training at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada

I knew about Team in Training (an initiative of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada) because one of my good friends, Greg Mitchell, recently completed a Triathlon in Hawaii to fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Given my (losing, to this moment) history with cancer (I have lost many family members and dear friends to various forms of cancer), I am always keen to profile non-profits that work to raise funds for cancer research/work. Thus my post on Team in Training at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (in this case I?m profiling the British Columbia and Yukon chapter)

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s Team In Training (TNT) has:
* Trained over a half a million runners, walkers, triathletes, cyclists and hikers
* Raised over $1.2 billion to fund lifesaving cancer research
* Two 4-5 month training options:
* In-person program from our gigantic network of certified coaches
* On-line option ? same great coaches, ?virtually?
* More than 200 exciting endurance events to choose from.

There are some remarkable stories. One of them is Tony, a leukemia survivor, who with TnT LLSC has trained for a marathon and a triathlon, and this fall will be training with us and mentoring participants who train for the RBC GranFondo Whistler. Tony?s story is extremely inspiring. And I hope you can support the work of Team in Training. I?ve grown fond of this initiative since Greg did it (it?s been his second year in a row, and he?s amazing).

I encourage you to explore the links on my blog post and read Tony?s story, and if you are so inclined, please support this worthy initiative.

Fidelity, Knight problems add to Nasdaq's Facebook woes

By now you've seen?the photo of Bill Clinton with the porn stars, the one that began circulating on Twitter last evening and is now in?Page Six, and in various other tabloids, along with faux shocked headlines like "What will Hillary say?"?Nevermind that Clinton simply posed with the women, that they were fully clothed,??

Tattle on Parking Jerks with This App to Publicly Shame Them [Video]

Apparently there's a mild epidemic in Russia where drivers park anywhere they please, including sidewalks or anyplace they can fit their vehicles. So a Russian news website, The Village, has supposedly created an app that lets citizens tattle on these jerks. More »
