ZTE's oddly named -- like most of its sets, honestly -- Mimosa X doesn't bring to mind bubbly champagne breakfast drinks, but it does have a glossy display and Android 4. Gene work raises breast cancer hope | Cancer Kick

The genetic code of the most common type of hereditary breast cancer has been
mapped for the first time, raising hopes for better diagnosis and treatment
for the killer disease, scientists said.

Researchers say they have ?fully sequenced? the DNA of two breast cancers
caused by a faulty BRCA1 gene, which is responsible for aggressive and
highly drug-resistant tumours.

The team from the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at the Institute
of Cancer Research (ICR) say they hope that their work will lead to more
tailored treatment for patients.

Dr Rachael Natrajan, one of the scientists involved in the study, said: ?It is
exciting to find new genes which could be involved in causing and driving
breast cancer. Now these have been identified we have to do more work to
find out the role that they play.

?Ultimately, this knowledge could help us develop new treatments that target
the specific defects of each patient?s disease.?

Breast cancers genetically passed down through families account for up to 10%
of all cases, affecting around 4,500 people in the UK each year.

The scientists said cases caused by the BRCA1 gene are ?usually aggressive?
and ?do not benefit? from targeted drugs such as tamoxifen and herceptin.

The research, published today in the Journal of Pathology, found that despite
both tumours being caused by the same source they mutated in almost
completely different ways.

Professor Jorge Reis-Filho, who co-authored the study, said: ?This research
has big implications for how we treat hereditary breast cancer in the future.

?We often consider patients with a faulty BRCA gene as one group but our work
shows that each tumour can look very different from each other genetically.
Now we understand this, we can start to identify the best treatment
strategies to save more lives of hereditary breast cancer patients.?

Using the information gathered they then scanned the genetic code of several
other breast cancers and discovered three genes, not previously linked to
the disease, which they believe are worth investigating further.

The study also included teams from the Institut Curie in France, the
University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands, The Cancer Research UK
London Research Institute in London and the University of Nottingham.

Last week the ICR, writing in the British Journal of Cancer, said all women
under 50 who are diagnosed with triple-negative (TN) breast cancer should be
screened for the BRCA1 gene fault, which also carries with it an additional
high risk of developing ovarian cancer.

It said the screening could identify hundreds of extra women every year who
may benefit from tailored therapy.

Ad Agency BBH Moves Into Social Gaming, Seeks Developers Who ...

Bartle Bogle Hegarty today became the latest company to make the leap into social gaming, and it is on the lookout to give seed funding to social gaming developers who want to make the jump with them.

The ad agency?s Asian division, BBH Asia Pacific, has opened a new venture, Chuck Studios, which will be run in partnership with one of its longtime clients, the confectionery giant Perfetti Van Melle ? makers of Chupa Chups lollipops. Together, the two will invest in social games promoting the brand, in exchange for a share of whatever revenue is made from the content.

The first product of the venture, Chupa Chucker, made in partnership with studio Atommica, goes live today on Facebook. Future games will also run on iOS, Android, and HTML5, BBH tells us, and may extend to other brands, too.

The news of BBH?s move into gaming was first reported last week by AdAge, although BBH has clarified to us that this venture will not cover investments into more capital-intensive areas like video games.

Rather, it is, at least for now, only limited to the smaller, more casual social games that have spread like wildfire through social networks like Facebook and have lifted the fortunes of companies like Zynga many times over.

It is nothing new for agencies to enlist the help of games developers to create engaging marketing content to promote a brand. But what is perhaps more interesting about this launch is that it puts BBH and Perfetti Van Melle into a potential partnership to actually generate revenues from these games ? rather than simply throwing money at into making games as part of marketing spend.

Atommica, in addition to developing games, also has created its own ?cross-promotion and monetization platform? for social games ? presumably this is incorporated into the game, and will help drive that revenue generation.

In addition to giving the developers access to the brands? IP, BBH says it will also assist in helping to market the games once they?re published.

Product director Pieter Walraven tells us that BBH is not disclosing how much it will typically invest in each game, and in any case it will vary, depending on the work involved. ?Deeper games that monetize better often require more capacity to develop which requires a higher upfront investment to lower the risk for the partnering developer and show our commitment,? he says.

He says before a partnership gets the okay, BBH models out the estimated installs on a particular platform and figures out the ARPU per game. ?The only requirement is that the numbers have to check out.?

Rufus Wainwright's 'Prima Donna' Has U.S. Premiere At The Brooklyn Academy Of Music (PHOTOS)

Nearly five years after a dropped deal with the Metropolitan Opera and three years after it premiered at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England, Rufus Wainwright's first opera, "Prima Donna," landed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York for its U.S. premiere Sunday afternoon. Angelica Houston, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson could be spotted in the audience, alongside Wainwright himself, who looked sharp in a bedazzled toreador outfit.

The opera, written in French with English subtitles (and co-written by Bernadette Colomine), follows an acclaimed, but forgotten soprano, Regine Saint Laurent, who is preparing a return to the stage in the role she was known for, "Alienor d'Aquitaine." Regine is panic-stricken about reprising Alienor, convinced her voice is forever gone. In her somewhat deranged state, she latches on to a young journalist who is all too ready to lavish attention on her.

The opera received mixed reviews when it ran in England, with a completely different cast from the one on stage stateside. While the opera lacked a key emotional moment that could have made it great, this viewer found it worth the two-hour runtime -- highlights included the shifting backdrops, the maid's (Kathryn Guthrie Demos) solo performance -- which outshone any other single moment on stage -- and a subtle, effective ending. The plot itself takes a while to build, but picks up in the second half, when it delivers a few amusing tricks. At times, it's reminiscent of "The Artist," another film that shows the depression, anxiety and irrational behavior that ensue when a star falls.

DETROIT ? General Motors earned its largest profit ever in 2011, two years after it nearly collapsed into financial ruin.

Strong sales in the U.S. and China helped the 103-year-old carmaker turn a profit of $7.6 billion, beating its old record of $6.7 billion in 1997 during the pickup truck and SUV boom.

GM is a vastly different company than it was back then. It's smaller, has less debt and its contract with the United Auto Workers is less costly. But it took a government bailout and a trip through bankruptcy protection in 2009 to cut its bloated costs. The company made record money last year even though U.S. auto sales were near historic lows at 12.8 million cars and trucks.

But problems surfaced in its latest results. GM lost $700 million before taxes in Europe, and its South American operations lost $100 million. Sales growth slowed in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, even as more Americans bought cars and trucks.

GM's stock price fell 43 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $24.50 in pre-market trading.

The U.S. government still owns 26.5 percent of the company and is waiting for the share price to rise before selling in an effort to recoup the bailout money.

Last year, GM made the bulk of its income in North America, where its pretax profit totaled $7.2 billion. International Operations, which includes Asia, made $1.9 billion before taxes, but that was down.

During the year, GM's global sales rose 7.6 percent to 9.03 million vehicles to help it reclaim the title of world's largest automaker from Toyota Motor Corp.

"We will build on these results as we bring more new cars, crossovers and trucks to market," CEO Daniel Akerson said.

The company wants to keep expenses down by freezing its underfunded U.S. pension plan, and it hinted at factory and job cuts to restore profitability in Europe.

The 2011 profit of $4.58 per share was 62 percent higher than a year earlier. Full-year revenue rose 11 percent to $150 billion.

But GM's fourth-quarter profit fell 8 percent to $468 million, or 28 cents per share. Revenue rose 3 percent to $38 billion. Before one-time items that totaled 21 cents, GM earned 40 cents per share.

Analysts expected earnings of 42 cents on revenue of $37.9 billion.

GM also said Thursday that its 47,500 blue-collar workers in the U.S. will get $7,000 profit-sharing checks in March. The checks are based on North American performance and are a record for the company.

The company has placed Vice Chairman Steve Girsky in charge of the European management board and is adding executives in preparation for restructuring. Factory closures and layoffs are likely but could provoke a fight with powerful labor unions.

Girsky has said GM intends to fix the European unit, made up of the Opel and Vauxhall brands, and keep it in the company. GM came close to selling the unit in 2009.

Wall Street falls after retail sales data disappoints (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The S&P 500 index retreated on Tuesday from near a seven-month high after weaker-than-expected January U.S. retail sales data curbed investors' appetite for risky assets.

Leading the fall was the financial sector, with two of the top three biggest decliners on the Dow Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N).

Citigroup downgraded Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) to "neutral" from "buy," saying earnings headwinds would continue at the company even as capital concerns subside. Bank of America shares were down 1.1 percent at $8.16 and JPMorgan shares fell 1.5 percent to $37.70.

The 0.4 percent rise in retail sales fell short of the 0.7 percent increase expected by economists polled by Reuters and reflected cutbacks in car purchases and online shopping.

"The data shows that consumers are still hanging in there, just not as strong as we expected," said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James at St. Petersburg in Florida.

"It shows that we are still battling some headwinds here, but the economy is definitely in a recovery mode."

The disappointing data added to concerns stemming from Moody's Investors Service downgrade on Monday of credit ratings on six euro-zone countries.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 42.54 points, or 0.33 percent, at 12,831.50. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) fell 6.30 points, or 0.47 percent, at 1,345.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 12.93 points, or 0.44 percent, at 2,918.46.

On Monday, the S&P 500 rose near a seven-month high, up more than 25 percent from a low in early October. The benchmark index has encountered strong resistance in the 1,355-1,360 area.

In other data, U.S. business inventories rose 0.4 percent in December, slightly lower than an estimated increase of 0.5 percent in December.

A third report showed import prices rose a touch more than expected in January as petroleum and food rebounded strongly, but underlying inflation pressure from imports remained muted.

Late Monday, Moody's put Britain's Aaa rating in jeopardy for the first time and warned it may cut France and Austria as well. Moody's also downgraded six euro-zone nations, including Spain and Italy.

But data from Germany on Tuesday suggested that Europe's bulwark economy is picking up pace again. The ZEW economic think tank's monthly poll of economic sentiment jumped to 5.4 from minus 21.6 in January, well above the consensus forecast in a Reuters poll of analysts for a rise to minus 12.0.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) plans to announce a fourth-generation (4G) version of its iPad in the first week of March, a Wall Street Journal report said, citing a person briefed on the matter. Apple shares rose slightly to $503.41 after hitting above the $500 mark for the first time on Monday.
