Chinese Stocks Rise After Q2 GDP Comes In Line With Expectations

The Shanghai Composite is up 1.5% despite the latest data confirming a slowdown in China.

This is because the lack of bad news, i.e. Q2 GDP of 7.5% in line with expectations, is good news.

Economists had been lowering their GDP forecasts ahead of the release.

Here's a quick look at how other Asian markets are doing.

  • Hong Kong's Hang Seng is up 0.4%
  • Korea's KOSPI is down 0.1%?
  • Australia's S&P/ASX 200 is up 0.2%
  • The Nikkei is closed

Chinese GDP is up 7.6% in the first half of the year. Markets are watching to see if policymakers will move to support their 7.5% 2013 growth target.

Speak Freely campaign to make phones work during disasters launches on Indiegogo, app now on Google Play

Speak Freely is an initiative to allow smartphones to communicate even during disasters when cellular networks are unavailable. The campaign is currently seeking for support on Indiegogo, where it has raised $7,478 out of its goal of $300,000 to date.

serval-mesh

The team behind Speak Freely have also developed free software called Serval Mesh, which uses the Wi-Fi radio on a smartphone to connect to so-called impromptu networks made up of other mobile phones. Serval Mesh was developed out of three years? worth of experience with the New Zealand Red Cross.

Already, the Serval Project has released an experimental version of this software as an app on Google Play. Called Serval Mesh, the app which is open-source and free to download will allow consumers to make encrypted calls, send encrypted text messages, share maps, videos and files. The Serval Project likewise permits consumers to retain one?s phone number, so that they can be contacted by people they know.

Meanwhile, with the Speak Freely campaign, the Australia-based team envisions creating Serval Mesh Extenders that will allow for communication 10 to 100 times better than short-range Wi-Fi. This will let consumers make calls, send messages or files up to tens of kilometres away. Such technology does not require rooting or jail-breaking a device in order to work.

Furthermore, the project hopes to manufacture several hundred of these Serval Mesh Extenders, which they will give to humanitarian organizations with which they have formed partnerships, as well as bleeding-edge adopters. These will be responsible for testing the technology and providing feedback that will be used to introduce improvements.

Out of the $300,000 goal, one-third will be used on hardware components, while the rest will be used for processes such as designing, assembly, distribution, collecting feedback and gathering results.

If they do not meet the $300,000 goal, the team promises to use the collected funds for the development of the Serval Mesh and Mesh Extenders. It will then continue with the design process, reduce the scope of the testing, and provide the available number of Mesh Extenders to testers.

The team also accepts volunteers, particularly testers and software developers, or even advocates, to join their team.

Check out their Indiegogo page if you want to support the initiative. Here is a link, as well, to the free Serval Mesh app on Google Play.

AP PHOTOS: Protests against Zimmerman acquittal

Demonstrations erupted across the United States ? ranging from dozens to hundreds ? in support of the family of Trayvon Martin. Protesters marched against the not guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman for the shooting of the unarmed black teenager.

At New York City's Middle Collegiate Church in Manhattan, congregants wore hooded sweatshirts ? as the 17-year-old Martin did the night he was shot.

And in Manhattan's Union Square, hundreds of people gathered to voice their passions over the verdict, hoisting placards with images of Martin.

Protesters also gathered in Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., along with several other cities.

Here are some images from the demonstrations:

New guide helps NH businesses conserve energy

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? The Retail Merchants Association of New Hampshire has put out a guide to help businesses reduce their use of energy and expenses related to poor building performance.

The guide is the result of knowledge gained during a 4-year-old program in which nearly 200 small and mid-sized businesses undertook a variety of energy evaluations and retrofits, said Amanda Holden, the association?s energy efficient program director.

The 82-page free guide can be downloaded from the association?s website, www.rmanh.com. It discusses such topics as replacing a boiler, heating with electricity, hot water systems and refrigeration and includes specific cases of businesses making improvements.

?The field guide will help other business owners learn more about the benefits of energy conservation and efficiency and help set them on their way toward lower energy costs,? Holden said.

The association is a statewide, nonprofit trade association representing over 900 businesses in the state, from large chains to small independent retailers.

Executive Councilor Raymond Burton said the guide will introduce the best practices to businesses across the state.

Hundreds of new charges filed in Cleveland kidnapping case

On Friday, prosecutors filed a 977-count indictment against Ariel Castro, the man who allegedly kidnapped and held three women for nearly 10 years in a Cleveland neighborhood. Castro is being charged with 512 counts of kidnapping and 446 counts of rape.

Christmas Day 2006, rape.

A new 977-count indictment filed Friday provides a painful look at what prosecutors say was a decade of captivity for three women in suspect Ariel Castro's home in a rough Cleveland, Ohio, neighborhood. Among the most serious charges: that he caused the death of one of his victims' fetuses by punching and starving her.

Among the most haunting: that he assaulted the women throughout their captivity, causing psychological harm to them and to the daughter he fathered with one of them through assault. And in another newly unveiled accusation, the indictment also alleges that on the same day that the child was born, Christmas of 2006, Castro raped one of the other women, who had helped deliver the baby.

"Today's indictment moves us closer to resolution of this gruesome case," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty said in a statement.

Castro, 53, is accused of kidnapping the three women and holding them captive ? sometimes restrained in chains ? along with the 6-year-old girl he fathered.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated murder related to one act, saying he purposely caused the unlawful termination of the pregnancy of one of the women. The new, 576-page indictment also charges him with 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of felonious assault, three counts of child endangerment and one count of possessing criminal tools.

Authorities say the filing covers the entire period that the women were imprisoned, from 2002 until May of this year, superseding an earlier indictment that listed accusations for only some of the years. The indictment does not include charges that could carry a death sentence, but McGinty said he is still reserving that option. Castro will be arraigned on the new charges Wednesday. He is scheduled for trial Aug. 5.

Castro pleaded not guilty to the earlier indictment of 329 counts. A message was left with his attorney Friday seeking comment on the new charges. His legal team has hinted Castro would plead guilty if the death penalty was off the table.

A communications firm representing the women said they would not comment. The women released a three-minute video this week thanking the community for its support.

Analysis: Retailers keep inventories low for back-to-school sales

By Dhanya Skariachan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stung by leftover inventory because of a wet, cold spring and unsure about consumer spending, many retailers are ordering conservatively for the second busiest selling season of the year behind the end of the year holiday period, according to executives in shipping, banking and manufacturing.

"I don't think this is going to be a blowout year. I think this is going to be a little bit of a tough year," John Barbour, CEO of educational products maker LeapFrog Enterprises Inc said about the rest of 2013. "People have less money in their pockets."

While the U.S. economy has recovered modestly since the financial crisis, median household income is still below where it was before the 2007-2009 recession began, a recent report from Sentier Research showed. (For a related graphic, click http://link.reuters.com/taf69t)

Better inventory tracking tools also enable retailers to wait longer than usual to place back-to-school orders. That could mean higher profit margins in the back half of the year as retailers will likely not have to offer as many discounts to get rid of excess inventory. But they also risk not having enough stock if consumers spend more than anticipated.

"From their perspective, it is better to have missed sales than to end up having too much inventory, which you have to mark down," BB&T Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba said.

Market research firm NPD Group expects consumers to start shopping later but spend more this year, especially online. NPD sees a 3 percent rise in back-to-school sales from last year.

Many retailers declined to provide details of the size and timing of back-to-school orders. But figures on shipments, factory orders and credit are down or flat with last year.

Data from China, where U.S. retailers get electronics, garments, toys and many other products made, showed new export orders shrinking in June at their fastest pace since September 2012.

United Parcel Service Inc, the world's No. 1 package delivery company, on Friday forecast second-quarter profit below Wall Street expectations, saying customers were selecting slower but cheaper shipping services in a weak economy.

Import volume at the major container ports is expected to rise 1.1 percent in July, versus 3.3 percent for the same period last year, according to a report from the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

Those ports handled 1.38 million TEU in May, up 0.6 percent from May 2012. A TEU is one 20-foot cargo container or its equivalent. June was estimated at 1.37 million TEU, down 0.7 percent from a year ago.

A ho-hum first half "has brought some caution in for sure," said Craig Errington, vice president of marketing at Wrangler, a unit of VF Corp. He declined to comment on the size of orders for the upcoming season.

SAFE INVENTORY

Working capital lines of credit that stores tap to buy inventory are "at historically low levels" and not showing the usual peak before the back-to-school season, said Keith Vercauteren, who works in the capital finance arm of Wells Fargo, which has many retail clients.

Vercauteren said utilization on its lines of credit averaged about 17 percent for the first quarter. Its lines of credit have averaged more than about 30 percent utilization before 2008.

Unlike years past, when retailers would buy 15 to 20 percent more than what they sold the previous season, they played safe this time and bought the same amount of backpacks and school supplies as they sold last year, said Steve Russo, owner of FAB Starpoint, which makes "Hello Kitty" and other licensed goods.

"Although weather played a big factor this quarter, the economic backdrop remains very challenging for our customer," Michael Bloom, president and chief operating officer at discount chain Family Dollar Stores Inc said on an earnings conference call. "She is stretching her budget and forced to make choices."

June sales reports from other retailers such as lingerie chain Victoria's Secret parent L Brands Inc and Cato Corp also showed that shoppers were holding back on nonessential purchases.

Some retailers said they can order less or later because they are able to manage inventory better with the help of smarter tracking tools and buying strategies.

"We are getting smarter at supply chain. So what the vendor might perceive as being cautious may also just be (us) being smarter at how we use supply chain, how we use forecasts," said Ron Boire, merchandising chief at Sears Holdings Corp, owner of Sears department stores and the Kmart discount chain.

For example, the stores are buying denim in bulk instead of finished denim products so that it can get them made according to demand.

"The time it takes from concept to shelf has been reduced," said Simon Atkins, the head of Adidas Sport Style US. While it used to be as much as two years, the German sportswear maker is now testing "in-season replenishment."

Ordering closer or during the season also lets stores react faster when they see a product becoming popular.

"If you are ordering 15 months in advance, you might have tied up some of your cash," and not have the ability to do that, said Curt Andrews, vice president of marketing operations at consumer electronics store chain RadioShack Corp.

Facing the music

According to the Associated Press, Alex Rodriguez had his long-awaited meeting yesterday with MLB?s investigators regarding his alleged connection to Biogenesis. If you are looking for any juicy details, well, there?s just not much to report.

The meeting took place Friday before the New York Yankees third baseman?s latest injury rehabilitation game in the minor leagues was rained out.

While A-Rod didn?t speak with reporters Friday, the meeting was confirmed by a person who spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

MLB investigators are probing the closed anti-aging clinic Biogenesis. Rodriguez has said he used PEDs while with Texas from 2001-03 but has denied using them since. He was linked to Biogenesis in a report in January by Miami New Times.

It was not known whether Rodriguez refused to answer MLB?s questions.

We heard earlier this week that Ryan Braun refused to answer questions from MLB?s investigators. While it?s not confirmed whether Rodriguez had a similar approach, that was certainly the expectation going in. While the report from ESPN.com earlier this week said that MLB is prepared to hand out 100-game suspensions sometime after the All-Star break, our own Craig Calcaterra was told by a source that the timeline and severity of the Biogenesis discipline has not been determined. However, the process could accelerate now that a conversation with Rodriguez, or lack thereof, is out of the way.

Rodriguez, who is coming back from January hip surgery, is 2-for-15 (.133) with one RBI through six minor league rehab games. He hasn?t been able to play since Wednesday due to inclement weather.

Moon Has Close Encounters with Planets, Star This Month: How to See It

If you only glance at the sky now and then, you may think it's pretty much the same every night. Regular sky watchers know better, and are aware of the constant changes the sky undergoes.

Take the moon, for example. Although most people know that the moon revolves around the Earth, they may never have noticed this movement with their own eyes. This week we get a chance to do exactly that.

The problem is that much of the time the moon is in an open reach of sky, and there are no fixed points to mark its movement. This week it passes close to the bright star Spica and the?planet Saturn?in the constellation Virgo. [Stunning Night Sky Photos by Stargazers (July 2013)]

On Sunday night (July 14), the moon will be well to the right of Spica (in the northern hemisphere...reverse left and right if you're south of the equator) in the evening sky.

On Monday night (July 15), the moon will be immediately above Spica. In fact, if you live in Central America or Africa, the moon will pass right in front of Spica, in what is called a lunar occultation.

On Tuesday night (July 16), the moon will have moved well to the left of the moon, and will be just below the planet Saturn.

On Wednesday night (July 17), the moon will be well to the left of Saturn.

Let's go back to Monday night, when the moon is closest to Spica. This will not be the only astronomical encounter this night. Stay up until the wee hours of the morning, and you'll see Mars and Jupiter rise an hour before sunrise. If you look at Mars in binoculars or a small telescope, you will see that it is close to one of the brightest star clusters in the sky, Messier 35 in?Gemini.

Now we will see how the planets move as well. Because they are farther away, they seem to move much more slowly than the moon.

?A few months ago we were watching Mars and Jupiter fade into evening twilight as they moved behind the sun. Now they have emerged into morning twilight to begin their next apparition in our night sky. If you're an early riser, keep an eye on them over the next couple of weeks as they approach each other, pass on the morning of July 22, and then draw apart again.

Editor's note:If you snap an amazing picture of the night sky that you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery send photos, comments and your name and location to Managing Editor Tariq Malik at spacephotos@space.com.

Fugitive Snowden to seek temporary asylum in Russia

By Lidia Kelly and Maria Tsvetkova

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Ex-intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, encamped at a Russian airport evading the reach of U.S. authorities, said on Friday he had sacrificed a comfortable life in disclosing U.S. spying secrets but had no regrets.

"A little over one month ago, I had family, a home in paradise," he said in first public remarks on what he sees as the personal cost of incurring Washington's anger in disclosing details of U.S. electronic surveillance programs.

"I also had the capability without any warrant to search for, seize, and read your communications. Anyone's communications at any time. That is the power to change people's fates," he told human rights activists at the Moscow airport where he has lived since arriving from Hong Kong on June 23.

Snowden, 30, in remarks relayed by the anti-secrecy group Wikileaks, said he would seek temporary asylum in Russia. Until now he has been living in the transit area of Sheremetyevo airport without having gone through passport control.

Russian authorities said he should not harm the interests of the United States if he wants refuge in Russia - a condition set by President Vladimir Putin.

"Snowden is serious about obtaining political asylum in the Russian Federation," said Vyacheslav Nikonov, a pro-Kremlin lawmaker who attended the meeting with Snowden, who had not been seen in public since arriving from Hong Kong.

Participants of the meeting said Snowden would seek to travel on to Latin America. It was unclear when that might happen, or how.

"He wants to move further on, he wants to move to Latin America - he said it quite clearly," Tanya Lokshina, deputy head of the Moscow office of Human Rights Watch, told Reuters.

"But in order to be guaranteed safety here in Russia, the only way for him to go was to file a formal asylum plea."

Russian officials have shown increasing impatience over Snowden's stay, but it had also become clear that he has no easy route to a safe haven from Moscow.

Snowden's predicament has thrust him into the hands of Russia as Washington and Moscow are seeking to improve relations that soured over issues including Syria and human rights since Putin's return to the Kremlin in 2012.

Putin has frequently accused the United States of double standards on human rights and has championed its critics, but he has invited President Barack Obama to Moscow for a summit in early September and does not want to ruin the chances for that.

Putin's spokesman repeated earlier conditions that Snowden should stop harming the interests of the United States if he wants asylum.

"As far as we know, he considers himself a defender of human rights and a campaigner for democratic ideals," spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Peskov said Snowden should "fully refrain from actions inflicting damage on our American partners and on Russian-American relations," the Interfax news agency reported.

Nikonov said that this message had got through.

"I asked him if he was ready to give up his political activity against the United States. He said, ?Definitely, yes, all this activity was in the past'," the lawmaker said.

Peskov said he was unaware of a formal request for political asylum from Snowden, but he said would submit one on Friday. Putin has made clear Russia would not extradite Snowden to the United States.

DEATH PENALTY

After Snowden's meeting, pro-Kremlin politicians lined up to cast the American as a rights activist who deserves protection because he could be charged in the United States with espionage, a crime that carries the death penalty.

"There is a really great risk that Edward Snowden is facing this very punishment," Sergei Naryshkin, speaker of the lower house of parliament, told state TV. "We simply can't allow this."

In the remarks released by Wikileaks, he cast himself in similar terms.

"I did what I believed right and began a campaign to correct this wrongdoing. I did not seek to enrich myself. I did not seek to sell US secrets," he said, according to the statement.

"That moral decision to tell the public about spying that affects all of us has been costly, but it was the right thing to do and I have no regrets."

Lokshina, of Human Rights Watch, said U.S. officials asked her to tell Snowden the United States does not see it that way.

"I was contacted on my phone on my way to the airport on behalf of the ambassador and they asked me to relay to Snowden the official position of the U.S. authorities - that he is not a whistleblower, but had broken the law and should be held accountable," she said. She said she passed on the message.

A grainy picture of Snowden taken by one participant, with Wikileaks legal assistant Sarah Harrison to his right, soon surfaced on social media and news sites. He wore a grey shirt and looked in good health.

Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have offered Snowden asylum. Washington, which seeks to arrest Snowden on charges of espionage in divulging details of secret U.S. surveillance programs, has revoked Snowden's passport and pressed nations not to take him in or help him travel.

After the activists were led through a gray door marked "staff only", Lokshina said they were put on a bus, driven around until they reached a different part of Sheremetyevo and taken to a room where Snowden was waiting.

The meeting was constantly interrupted by announcements of departures and arrivals, she said, prompting Snowden to quip: "I've gotten used to those."

Man, who killed DU students' union president 14 years ago, gets life term

A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a students' union president of Delhi University college 14 years ago by a Delhi court, which termed it as a "rare" case.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau sentenced Jitender alias Kalla for murdering Anil Badana, the then president of Satyawati College students' union and made it clear that he would not be considered for any remission till he spends 30 years in jail.

"I am of a considered opinion that this case cannot be put on the same pedestal as other ordinary murder cases. It is also true that punishment in every case does send a message to the community at large.

"Thus besides a number of other factors to be considered one of the relevant factor... is the sentiments of community or the message which may travel to the community at large and the fact that it may deter similar other such like offenders. The present case can be easily classified as a 'rare case' which calls for the exercising of alternative options by the court," the judge said.

The court imposed a fine of Rs four lakh on Kalla, who is in jail from past over 13 years, and said if the amount is realised, Rs 2 lakh should be given to the victim's family.

According to the prosecution, Kalla had shot dead Badana, 26, at a marriage function under Keshav Puram police station on March 10, 1999. Kalla was harbouring ill-will against Badana as he was going to depose against him in a criminal case, it said.

Kalla had also injured the bridegroom's father Madan Lal Sharma while opening fire indiscriminately as those attending function tried to nab him, it said.

One of the eye witnesses Sumit Nayyar, who had informed the police about the incident, had to pay a heavy price as Kalla immediately went to his home at Mukherjee Nagar to kill him but when he realised that Sumit had not reached there, the accused pumped three bullets in the chest of his father to scare him away from maintaining his stand before the police.

Boeing stock dives on fire in empty 787 in London

Shares of Boeing are sinking after a fire aboard an empty 787 airplane flown by Ethiopian Airlines at Heathrow Airport.

British police said the fire is being treated as unexplained.

The entire fleet of 787s was grounded in January for problems involving the plane's lithium-ion batteries. One caught fire at Boston's Logan airport.

The planes resumed flying in May after Boeing made redesigns to the battery system that were approved by global aviation regulators. Ethiopian was the first airline to resume using the 787.

Boeing shares fell $7.20, or 6.7 percent, to $99.68, around midday in New York.

Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said in an email to The Associated Press that the company has personnel at looking into the event at Heathrow.

Air pollution responsible for more than 2 million deaths worldwide each year, experts estimate

[unable to retrieve full-text content]More than two million deaths occur globally each year as a direct result of human-caused outdoor air pollution, a new study has found. In addition, while it has been suggested that a changing climate can exacerbate the effects of air pollution and increase death rates, the study shows that this has a minimal effect and only accounts for a small proportion of current deaths related to air pollution.

Texas Senate GOP renews abortion battle

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republicans in the Texas Legislature have passed an omnibus abortion bill that is one of the most restrictive in the nation.

But Democrats vowed Saturday to fight both in the courts and the ballot box as they used the measure to rally their thousands of their supporters on the Capitol steps in Austin.

The Texas Senate gave final passage late Friday night to a law that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, require abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and require all abortions take place in surgical centers. Republicans said it would protect the health of women and babies. Democrats said it was a backdoor ban on abortions.

US Official: Israel Strikes in Syria

Jul 12, 2013 8:38pm

Israeli warplanes conducted an airstrike on July 5 in the northern Syrian port city of Latakia, a U.S. official said, confirming a report.

The attack is believed to be the fourth Israeli airstrike conducted in Syria this year targeting shipments of advanced Russian weapons that Syria is providing to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

There had been conflicting reports as to who may have been responsible for a series of large blasts that occurred in the early morning hours at a Syrian naval base in Latakia last Friday.

Initially, there were reports that Syrian rebels said they were responsible for the attack that resulted in the explosions, but later a rebel spokesman claimed that Israeli fighter jets were behind the attack. ?That same spokesman claimed that rebel forces believed the base housed advanced Yakhont long-range anti-ship missiles.

CNN was first to report Friday that U.S. officials believe that Israel was behind the attack, which the network said was targeting the anti-ship missiles bound for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A U.S. official told ABC News that ?it was unclear what kinds of weapons ?Israel may have been targeting in the July 5 airstrike.

Israeli officials have consistently declined to comment on previous reports this year that they have been responsible for airstrikes inside Syria.

The three previous covert Israeli air strikes that have taken place in Syria this year, confirmed afterwards by U.S. officials, all targeted Russian weapons systems that Syria was believed to be funneling to Hezbollah in Lebanon.? Syria has been a long-time arms provider to the militant Lebanese organization.

The first strike near Damascus in late January targeted a convoy carrying anti-aircraft missiles that may have been on the move to Hezbollah.

In early May, Israel conducted two separate airstrikes, also near Damascus, that a U.S. official told ABC News targeted as many as a dozen medium range Fateh-110 missiles intended for Hezbollah.

Moto X using Verizon's network surfaces in leaked photo

What's said to be the Moto X has been breaking cover left and right, and now it's made yet another appearance. Android Central has scored a new photo of the device in question, and while it looks nearly identical to an earlier snapshot, a keen eye will notice a Verizon 4G logo sitting in the status bar. The outlet also notes that the soft navigation keys are slightly translucent like those in the previous leak, which may point to an unreleased version of Android. Paired with an internal document from Big Red that pegs the hardware for an August 23rd arrival, it looks like the Moto X is a sure bet on the carrier.

Sheeran leads a sea of orange in a sing-along

Performances

July 12, 2013 at 10:47 AM ET

Fans of singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran greeted "The Orange Room" Singer decked out in the same bright, sunny shade to celebrate his concert on the TODAY plaza Friday morning.

As the 22-year-old Brit sang hits "Lego House," "The A Team," and ?You Need Me, I Don?t Need You," the crowd sang along with every word. It's no surprise they knew the songs so well. Many of those fans starting camping out on Wednesday for the big performance in New York.

"My nana always said if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere," Sheeran said as he looked on at the sea of orange. "I'm just overwhelmed by it."

Saturday night he'll see an even bigger crowd just outside the Big Apple as he opens for Taylor Swift at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It's just one stop on his ongoing tour with Swift, and so far, it's been a memorable experience for Sheeran.

"The best thing about being on the road in general is just playing every single night in front of people that are genuinely fans of your music," he told TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. "I think the best thing about being on the road with Taylor is she has a lot of days off, so I actually get to see America. I got to see the Empire State Building the other day. I'd never been there, so that was fun."

Check out the clips above to Sheeran's performances and to hear what else the singer had to say. See our favorite tweets and Instagrams using our hashtag #EdSheeranTODAY.

Fails to start - hangs on windows logo

I'll answer the questions anyway even though the problem seems to have resolved itself as it has in the past with the windows updates. I left it hanging on the starting windows screen for about an hour. To my surprise I came back and it had shutdown itself. I started it up and it booted fine and when I logged on I was notified of some USB driver installations, but I don't think that was caused the reboot as I had changed the USB slots around for the mouse & keyboard afterwards.

So I'm curious as to what is causing the issue. All I can say is when it worked the start up noises were regular - that grinding type noise (that happens when the hard drive is detected?) occurred when it started up normally.?

?

Acer Aspire M3802.?

?

The problem with no boot up started after some windows updates many, many months ago. I have no idea about the classpnp.sys hang.?

?

I do not know if they are reflected properly. Can you change this under the bios settings??

New Nokia Windows phone featues 41-megapixel camera

by Associated Press

KREM.com

NEW YORK? -- Nokia is unveiling a new phone with a powerful camera that promises sharper images, even in low light.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 was introduced Thursday at an event in New York. It will run Microsoft's Windows Phone system.

The 41-megapixel camera records more detail than other camera phones and even tops point-and-shoot cameras. More pixels mean more sensors for capturing the light that forms an image.

Although more expensive cameras with better lenses can take better images, those cameras aren't always with you. Nokia says the Lumia 1020 gives people the ability to take good pictures with a device they always carry.

It will be available July 26 for $300 with a two-year service agreement with AT&T. Advance orders begin July 16.

Author convicted in Ariz. sweat lodge deaths freed

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) ? An author who saw his self-help business crash after he led a sweat lodge ceremony that left three people dead was paroled from prison on Friday after serving nearly two years for negligent homicide convictions.

James Arthur Ray, 55, was freed from the state prison in Buckeye, near Phoenix. Nothing in his conditions of release prohibits him from holding self-help seminars or conducting another sweat lodge ceremony, but his brother said Ray has no immediate plans to resurrect his business.

However, Jon Ray didn't rule out the possibility in the future, maintaining the deaths weren't his brother's fault.

"At this point, he wants to get out and hide out, and start putting his life back together, which has been completely turned upside down," he told The Associated Press earlier this week. "I say that with all due respect because I know a lot of people's lives have been turned upside down because of this unfortunate incident."

The tragedy occurred after dozens of people traveled to a scenic retreat just outside Sedona in October 2009 for James Arthur Ray's five-day "Spiritual Warrior" event.

The sweat lodge was the culminating event, touted as "hellacious hot" and a chance for participants to have powerful breakthroughs.

Things started going wrong about halfway through the two-hour ceremony. When it was over, 38-year-old Kirby Brown of Westtown, N.Y., and 40-year-old James Shore of Milwaukee were dead, and 18 others injured.

Liz Neuman, 49, of Prior Lake, Minn., slipped into a coma and died after more than a week in the hospital.

At trial, prosecutors said Ray ratcheted up the heat to dangerous levels, ignored pleas for help, and watched as overcome participants were dragged out of the sweat lodge.

A jury acquitted him of more serious manslaughter charges and convicted him of negligent homicide. He served 85 percent of the concurrent two-year terms for each of the deaths. Ray has appealed the convictions, alleging that errors by the prosecution tainted the case.

Ray has acknowledged that he was responsible for the deaths but offered no excuses for his lack of action as the chaos unfolded at the sweat lodge. He and his attorneys said Ray would have stopped the ceremony had he known people were dying or in distress.

The defense centered its case on the possibility that toxins or poisons contributed to the deaths.

None of the victims' families believes that 20 months was a sufficient sentence. They have said they would rather not see Ray in the self-help industry, or he should at least be more accountable for his actions.

Members of Neuman's family meet regularly to talk about her, share memories and vent feelings of frustration and anger ? a lot of which is aimed at Ray, said her daughter, Andrea Puckett. The birth of Puckett's two children and her brother's wedding are among the events made bittersweet by the loss of Neuman, she said.

"Ideally, we don't want him (Ray) doing anything in the industry anymore," Puckett said. "I don't think he has the right to work with people. If he does move forward with that, I hope people become aware of what he did and he changes the way that he handles his seminars and his teachings."

Brown's mother, Virginia, has quit her full-time job to focus on the nonprofit group called SEEK Safely that the family formed to help others avoid such a tragedy. This week, she was busy reaching out to people in the self-help industry asking them to commit to basic standards to ensure practitioners are truthful, act with integrity, and respect the people who choose to follow them ? something she said Ray failed to do.

"While he was in jail, there was a feeling of safety somehow," she said. "Now that he's coming out, I'm not planning on keeping track of his activities."

One of Shore's best friends, Matt Collins, is on the board of directors for SEEK Safely. He expects that Ray will find a way to continue his teachings but doesn't want to see him profit from tragedy.

"Being in prison is probably a good place to reinvent oneself, hopefully for the better," he said. "I don't know whether he's capable of recognizing the damage that the families suffered."

Jon Ray and his wife, who have visited James Arthur Ray in prison over the past 20 months, greeted him Friday as he was released. James Arthur Ray changed clothes in a shed on the prison grounds and jumped in a sedan that drove past a dozen journalists.

While in Arizona for the next few months, Ray must check in with a parole officer and get permission to leave the state. He also cannot drink alcohol or have deadly weapons.

While Ray has no intention of moving back into public seminars, Jon Ray said his brother is "definitely wanting to help people like he's always done.

James Ray declined interview requests from The Associated Press.

His website has been undergoing renovations for months and still features coverage of the deaths and his trial. It also prominently showcases his television appearances on Oprah and Larry King and his best-selling book.

Postings on his Facebook page show he hasn't lost all support.

Tom Thomas, a poker player from Amarillo, Texas, who was supposed to be at the 2009 "Spiritual Warrior" event, believes Ray can make a comeback.

"I'd still recommend him today, the man teaches the truth," Thomas said in an interview. "He really teaches what works, he knows what he's teaching, and it's real. I'll never take that away from him."

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at the end of the trading day Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record high today, up 169.26 points to close at 15,460.92.

It was a record-breaking day on Wall Street on Thursday.

Not only did the Dow and S&P 500 crash through their previous record highs, but the technology-heavy Nasdaq closed at its highest level in 13 years when the dot-com bubble was bursting.

The Nasdaq had its best day in three months, jumping 57.55 points, or 1.63 percent and closing at its highest level -- 3,578.30 -- since Sept. 29, 2000. That was when the dot-com bubble was bursting after a speculative period from 1997 when stock markets saw their equity value rise rapidly from growth in the Internet sector and related fields.

Thursday's big surge upwards came less than a day after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed would keep its foot on the stimulus gas pedal for some time, even if the unemployment rate hit the Fed's target of 6.5 percent.

His remarks were bolstered by the minutes from the Fed's latest policy meeting, which showed that policymakers wanted further reassurances about the strength of the jobs market before pulling back on stimulus measures.

(Read More: Will Investors Finally Buy Bernanke's Explanation)

Uncertainty over the Fed's direction had caused concern in the markets for weeks, but on Thursday Bernanke's words seemed to remove any doubt and investors went wild.

Thursday also saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average shoot up 169.26 points, or 1.11 percent, to close at a new all-time high of 15460.92. All 30 Dow components finished higher, led by Intel and Microsoft. The blue-chip index's point gain for 2013 is already greater than any year on record.

The S&P 500 soared 22.40 points, or 1.36 percent, to finish at 1,675.02, logging its sixth-consecutive rally and also setting a new closing high. The index is now on pace for its biggest weekly gain since January.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slid near 14.

"While you cannot guarantee that short-covering is taking place, this looks, smells and feels like a huge short-covering," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "Next week, we have the equivalent of what used to be the Humphrey-Hawkins testimony so we could get a lot of volatility again."

On a day for records:

  • The Dow and S&P 500 had their best day in one month
  • The S&P 500 has its first 6-day winning streak in almost two years
  • This was the second highest number of advancing stocks at the New York Stock Exchange this year (2,203 stocks rose at the NYSE?the most since the first trading day of the year on Jan. 2)
  • All 10 S&P 500 sectors ended the day up, and 8 of 10 sectors closed up over 1 percent.
  • All 30 Dow stocks, 90 percent of the S&P 500, and 94 percent of the Nasdaq 100 closed up.

The dollar dropped broadly against a basket of currencies, with its index falling to $82.418, its lowest since June 25 and down around 2.8 percent from the three-year high of $84.753. Meanwhile, Treasury prices gained after the government auctioned $13 billion in 30-year bonds at a high yield of 3.660 percent. The bid-to-cover ratio, an indicator of demand, was 2.26, versus the recent average of 2.59.

On the economic front, weekly jobless claims rose by 16,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 360,000, according to the Labor Department, above expectations for a reading of 340,000. The four-week moving average of new claims increased by a more modest 6,000 to 351,750.

Meanwhile, import and export prices declined for the fourth-straight month in June, according to the Labor Department.

Gasoline prices are forecast to jump between 10 and 20 cents per gallon within the next few days, driven by rising oil prices and peak driving season. Oil prices have risen in recent weeks on geopolitical concerns, along with declining inventories.

In Asia, the Shanghai Composite rose above the key 2,000 level for a second straight session on hopes that Wednesday's dismal trade data will lead the Chinese central bank to ease monetary policy in an effort to boost growth.

(Poll: Will China Experience a 'Hard Landing' in 2013?)

Meanwhile, the yen strengthened further against the dollar on Thursday after the Bank of Japan held its monetary policy steady, but upgraded the country's economic outlook.

Report - Female prisoners at California state prisons illegally sterilized

(NaturalNews) A new report issued by The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), a non-profit journalism group fighting injustice around the world, has uncovered some dark secrets lurking in the California prison system. According to information gathered from both state documents and personal interviews, CIR found that at least 148 female prisoners were illegally sterilized by contracted medical personnel at California prisons between 2006 and 2010, and perhaps hundreds more were unlawfully sterilized in years prior.

Between 1997 and 2010, state funds were distributed to the tune of nearly $150,000 to perform a procedure known as tubal ligation on hundreds of female inmates, some of whom were aggressively coerced into agreeing to the procedure. And two prisons in particular, the California Institution for Women in Corona and the Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, appear to have openly condoned the practice, which was targeted towards inmates who had served multiple prison terms.

Former Valley State Prison for Women OB-GYN Dr. James Heinrich was one the primary instigators, having actively pressured inmates to agree to the procedure. Multiple women who had once served terms at the facility claim Dr. Heinrich targeted them for the irreversible procedure, some while they were lying on hospital beds about to give birth to their children. Federal law prohibits pressing a woman to consent to such a medical procedure during labor or childbirth.

"As soon as he found out that I had five kids, he suggested that I look into getting it done," said Christina Cordero, a 34-year-old mother who served two years at Valley State for auto theft, to CIR. "He made me feel like a bad mother if I didn't do it."

Others have expressed similar sentiments, suggesting that Dr. Heinrich had a bizarre penchant for sterilizing inmates. According to the CIR report, Dr. Heinrich and others not only pressured women into getting tubal ligations, but they did so without proper approval from top medical officials in Sacramento. As it turns out, sterilization procedures cannot simply be administered to female prisoners in the willy-nilly way that Dr. Heinrich and others appear to have given them.

In his defense, Dr. Heinrich says he only offered the procedure to women with a history of at least three C-sections. But multiple women who say they were pressured into getting it did not meet this criteria. Nikki Montano, a 42-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to burglary, forgery and receiving stolen property had only had one previous C-section. She agreed, however, to have the procedure done anyway.

Though none of the alleged sterilizations were forced, many of them still appear to have been done illegally, which is the primary issue at hand. Some have suggested that this is at least partly due to the fact that, prior to 1979, California had a policy of compulsory sterilization that applied to all criminals. And after this policy was abolished, prison facilities still had the option to suggest sterilization to inmates and freely administer it with proper consent.

The law was eventually changed to require that prison facilities first receive approval from higher-ups at the state level before sterilizing inmates, but this change apparently flew under the radar of many veteran prison personnel that continued to administer the procedure at will. Even so, sterilization of inmates at California state prisons first originated as a type of eugenics to weed out undesirables in society, and that legacy appears to still be alive today.

"Under compulsory sterilization laws [in California] and in 31 other states, minority groups, the poor, the disabled, the mentally ill and criminals were singled out as inferior and sterilized to prevent them from spreading their genes," explains the CIR report. "Historians say Nazi Germany sought the advice of the state's eugenics leaders in the 1930s."

Induced seismicity? Recent spike of earthquakes in the central and eastern U.S. may be linked to human activity

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The number of earthquakes has increased dramatically over the past few years within the central and eastern United States. More than 300 earthquakes above a magnitude 3.0 occurred in the three years from 2010-2012, compared with an average rate of 21 events per year observed from 1967-2000. This increase in earthquakes prompts two important questions: Are they natural, or human-made? And what should be done in the future as we address the causes and consequences of these events to reduce associated risks? U.S. Geological Survey scientists have been analyzing the changes in the rate of earthquakes as well as the likely causes, and they have some answers.

Patriots' Dennard accused of DUI in Nebraska

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was arrested and accused of drunk driving Thursday in Nebraska while on probation for assaulting a police officer, the second New England player to get in serious legal trouble this summer.

Dennard's early-morning arrest in Lincoln, Neb., where he was a college star for the Cornhuskers, came 15 days after Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder and three days after Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the club will "be looking at our procedures and auditing how we do things" with regard to character reviews.

"The New England Patriots are extremely disappointed to learn of Alfonzo Dennard's arrest. We take this matter very seriously and are working to get more information on the incident," the team said in a statement.

Dennard's arrest is his second in 15 months. He hasn't served a 30-day jail sentence for the assault outside a Lincoln bar on Apr. 21, 2012. That is scheduled to begin next March. He also was sentenced to two years of probation.

Hernandez, a star tight end, was arrested on June 26 and charged with murder in the killing of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty. The Patriots cut Hernandez after he was arrested and before the charges were announced.

Dennard and Hernandez both were highly-touted college prospects whose draft stock dropped because of character concerns.

Seven days after being charged with assault, Dennard was drafted in the seventh round last year out of Nebraska by the Patriots. They drafted Hernandez in the fourth round in 2010 after he violated the substance abuse policy at Florida.

"If this stuff is true, then I've been duped and our whole organization has been duped," Kraft said Monday of the case involving Hernandez.

The team did not respond to a request Thursday for Kraft's reaction to Dennard's arrest.

The legal issues are bound to hover over the opening of training camp on July 25. Coach Bill Belichick rarely comments on such matters and instructs his players to do the same.

Belichick has sometimes signed players who had troubles elsewhere if he felt they could help the team win, hoping his disciplined approach and leaders such as Tom Brady and Vince Wilfork and now-retired Patriots including Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel could keep them in line.

Results have been mixed. Running back Corey Dillon and wide receiver Randy Moss, disgruntled on their previous teams, avoided off-field problems with the Patriots and were productive for several seasons. Chad Johnson, then known as Chad Ochocinco, caught just 15 passes in his only season with the Patriots in 2011 but caused no off-field distractions.

Dennard became a starter at cornerback in the seventh game of his rookie season. The other starter, Aqib Talib, was obtained from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Nov. 1 then signed a one-year contract on March 16. He missed his first game with the Patriots while completing a four-game suspension imposed by the NFL for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Talib had been suspended without pay for the 2010 opener and fined one additional game check for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy. That followed an altercation with a St. Petersburg cab driver during training camp in 2009. He also had charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Texas dropped a week before he was due to be tried for allegedly firing a gun at his sister's boyfriend.

On Thursday, Dennard was pulled over while driving just before 2 a.m. and failed a field sobriety test, police said. A phone listing for Dennard couldn't be found.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood said he was taken to a detoxification center but not jailed. He also was accused of refusing a chemical test and a driving infraction.

She said a final decision on the charges likely will be made by the Lincoln City Attorney's Office before the Aug. 12 court date assigned to Dennard. Assistant city prosecutor John McQuinn said his office had not yet received the citation against Dennard from police.

The Patriots' first preseason game is scheduled for Aug. 9 at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Terry Dougherty, Dennard's attorney in the assault case, said in April that he would ask Lancaster County District Judge Stephanie Stacy to suspend the 30-day sentence if Dennard complied with the terms of his probation over the subsequent 11 months. Stacy said then that she would consider such a motion.

It's unclear whether prosecutors will move to have Dennard's probation revoked. Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly didn't immediately return a message.

Dennard's arrest is the latest off-field incident involving a Patriots player while he was with them or before they obtained him. Among the others:

? Brandon Meriweather, a safety drafted in the first round in 2007 from Miami, fired a gun at an assailant who had shot Dolphins backup safety Willie Cooper outside the house the two players shared with another teammate, police said. Meriweather wasn't charged and police said he used the gun legally.

? Willie Andrews, a defensive back drafted in the seventh round in 2006 from Baylor, was cut by the Patriots after being arrested twice following the 2007 season. The first arrest was for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute two days after the Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants.

? Nick Kaczur, an offensive tackle drafted in the third round in 2005 from Toledo, pleaded guilty in July 2008 to speeding in a deal with prosecutors and was ordered to pay $355 in fines and fees. He originally was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, after being pulled over by state troopers near Utica, N.Y.

? Albert Haynesworth, a defensive tackle obtained in a trade on July 29, 2011, pleaded no contest the following month to a charge of simple assault in a case in which he was accused of touching a waitress' breast at a Washington, D.C., hotel.
