Post Superstorm Sandy, travelers prepare for a busy Thanksgiving

7 hrs.

High fares, crowded roads and the lingering effects of Superstorm Sandy and its successors: When it comes to Thanksgiving travel, it?s going to take more than a ?perfect storm? of travel hassles to stop Americans from heading to the airport or hitting the road this year.

?If you?re still looking to book airfare, it?s going to be cost-prohibitive and you won?t find many seats,? said Anne Banas, executive editor at SmarterTravel.com. ?People who haven?t been able to get flights at an affordable price will end up driving or taking the train.?

Fliers, in particular, should expect plenty of company, says the industry trade group Airlines for America. The group, which released its annual holiday forecast on Wednesday, estimates that 24 million people will fly during the 12-day period between Nov. 16 and Nov. 27.

That?s up by just 150,000 passengers over last year but with continuing capacity cuts, the result has been high load factors ? they?re expected to be in the high 80s over the holiday, says A4A ? and steadily rising fares. According to Travelocity.com, this year?s average domestic Thanksgiving fare is up 9 percent over last year, to $386.

That, in turn, could prompt more travelers to get behind the wheel, especially as falling gas prices take some of the sting out of driving. On Monday, the national average for regular gas was $3.49 per gallon, down 6 cents from the previous week and 31 cents over the last month.

That?s to be expected, says Gregg Laskoski, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, as overall seasonal demand drops and refineries switch to less-expensive winter blends.

?Despite all the recent chaos, we still see gas prices moving incrementally lower,? he told NBC News. ?We could see the average price at $3.30 or $3.25 by the end of the year.?

In the meantime, most travelers are finding that, outside of long gas lines in the Northeast, things are running relatively smoothly. ?I flew out of JFK on November 1 and it was easy,? said frequent traveler Maria Ferreras. ?There were no lines and no problems.?

In fact, Ferraras brings a unique perspective to traveling during large-scale weather events. A 25-year resident of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, she?s not only lived through several hurricanes but was actually visiting family on Staten Island when Sandy hit.

?We were OK but it was like d?j? vu,? she said. ?It just gives you an eerie feeling.?

As for Thanksgiving, she was originally planning to return to New York but has since decided to postpone that trip until early December, although not because of the weather. ?I?m actually going to be feeding about 50 people so I figured I?d better stay,? she told NBC News.

Others directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy will likely take a similar approach. In Atlantic City, where the storm flooded streets and destroyed parts of the oceanfront boardwalk, it comes as no surprise that would-be travelers are opting to stay close to home.

?People who booked trips to get away are trying to restore their homes and deal with their losses,? said Tom Lipiros, owner of Margate Travel Service. ?A few have postponed their plans but most have canceled them.?

As for travel to the area, it appears things are getting back on track even as another storm makes its way toward the Northeast. In Atlantic City, most casinos reopened last weekend and Lipiros reports that there haven?t been many cancellations for the holidays.

Things are also returning to normal in New York, at least in the areas most often frequented by travelers. Most hotels, theaters and attractions in midtown Manhattan are open, although others, primarily in the financial district and outlying boroughs remain closed. (The city?s official tourism organization, NYC & Company, maintains a list here.

?There?s still be more work to be done in the hardest-hit areas of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island but Manhattan, midtown and the Thanksgiving parade will go on,? said Kimberly Spell, chief communication officer for NYC & Co. ?New York City is going to be open and fully operational for the holiday.?

Lakers top Pistons 108-79, finally get 1st win

(AP) ? Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol have raised enough championship trophies to realize they really shouldn't be getting excited about any win in the first week of November.

After the Los Angeles Lakers stumbled through the past five weeks without winning any games anywhere, Kobe and Pau figured it's fine to enjoy a small victory.

Dwight Howard scored 28 points, Bryant had 15 points and eight assists, and the Lakers finally got their first victory of the season, 108-79 over the winless Detroit Pistons on Sunday night.

"We had to stop the bleeding, and there wasn't a way to do it other than coming out here tonight and getting a solid win," said Gasol, who scored 14 points. "We've got a little bit of tension out of ourselves right now."

Metta World Peace scored 18 points for the Lakers, who went 0-8 in the preseason and started the regular season 0-3 for just the fourth time in franchise history despite adding Howard and Steve Nash over the summer.

But the Lakers' growing worries about coach Mike Brown's new offense and their veteran roster's durability vanished for a night against the struggling Pistons, who never led and never threatened.

"We needed this bad, just to change the mood and give us some of that feel-good feeling," said Steve Blake, who tied his career high with five steals while starting in Nash's place. "Losing games was tough. I guess we did a good job of staying positive, but it feels good, that's for sure."

After their worst start to a season in 34 years, the Lakers occasionally resembled the powerhouse most expected to see this season ? even without Nash, who missed his second game with a small fracture in his leg. Los Angeles took a 28-point lead in the first half and stretched it to 36 points in the third quarter, with Howard dominating the paint and Bryant slipping easily into a playmaking role in the Nash's absence.

Howard excelled in the paint against Greg Monroe, hitting 12 of 14 shots ? most of them right at the rim ? and grabbing seven rebounds with just one foul.

"It's a relief ? more for Mike than anybody else," said Bryant, who appeared to play easily on his sore foot while taking just 10 shots and grabbing seven rebounds.

Brown is aware his offense is getting roasted by fans and critics everywhere from Toluca Lake to TNT's "Inside the NBA," but he's sticking with the motion-based schemes.

"We weren't perfect offensively, but I think everybody ? including us ? got a good taste of what it can be like," Brown said. "We're just barely scratching the surface on where this thing can go. ... Obviously, we needed a win. Every win we get gives us a little more belief on both ends of the floor."

Bryant got all eight of his assists in the first half, and the Lakers' starters played only token minutes in the fourth quarter, giving them valuable rest before Wednesday's trip to Utah. While the Lakers wait a week to learn the severity of Nash's injury, Blake had six assists and six points, while backup Darius Morris also played well with six points.

The Lakers began the regular season by dropping games to Dallas, Portland and the Clippers, but they've only started a season 0-4 once in franchise history ? and that was in 1957, back in Minneapolis. Los Angeles hadn't even started a season 0-3 since 1978 ? but that team won 15 of its next 16 games.

"I don't think anyone over there was panicked that they were 0-3 or that they hadn't won a preseason game," Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said. "They're a very good team. There's a big disparity right now between us and the Lakers. It was total domination."

Jonas Jerebko scored 18 points for Detroit in the second stop on a difficult six-game road trip.

Detroit's five starters all struggled mightily, going a combined 11 for 39 ? including Brandon Knight's 1-for-8 performance. Rodney Stuckey's shooting slump reached three games, with the starting guard going 0 for 6 to drop to 1 for 23 this season.

"We just had no rhythm to the game and no flow," said Tayshaun Prince, who scored nine points. "We knew the Lakers would try to start off quick, being in the position we were in without a win. You let a team shoot that high a percentage in the first quarter, it's always going to be a problem, especially playing against a great team. We're a young team, and we showed it tonight."

The Pistons also might wonder if the NBA's schedule-makers used Apple Maps to plot their trip: Detroit must travel to Denver for a game Tuesday, only to return to California to face the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday before heading back out to Oklahoma City.

NOTES: The Lakers hadn't started 0-3 at home since 1959. ... Lakers assistant coach Darvin Ham played on the Pistons' 2004 championship team, which upset the Lakers in the NBA finals. ... Flea, will.i.am, Andy Garcia and Jeremy Sisto attended the game.

The app's the thing as Shakespeare goes digital

1 hr.

William Shakespeare's plays are getting a 21st century-style makeover in the form of new apps for tablets and smart phones nearly 500 years after the Bard took pen to parchment.

Plays such as "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" spring to life in iPad apps released by Cambridge University Press, which pairs the texts with audio performances, commentary and other interactive content, transforming the classic plays for the digital age.

The apps are part of a new series called Explore Shakespeare that was introduced by the British publishing house to expand the playwright's reach to casual readers.

"A lot of people have a copy of Shakespeare on their bookshelf that they never got around to reading because they have this idea that Shakespeare is hard or has to be studied to be appreciated," said John Pettigrew, executive producer of the Explore Shakespeare series.

Pettigrew believes the plays are meant to be enjoyed and are accessible provided readers are given context to overcome outdated or poetic language.

While the core focus of the app is on the actual text, readers can consult glossaries, notes, photos and synopses at any point in the script.

"Everything there is designed to keep you in the play and to put you in the mind of the actor, director or writer," he explained.

To understand less common language, readers can tap on words and phrases to delve into their meaning.

"A classic one is in 'Romeo and Juliet' which is `wherefore art thou Romeo?' It's not 'where are you Romeo?', It's 'why are you Romeo?' So that kind of phrase gets a glossary to explain what is meant," said Pettigrew.

The apps also include full audio performances from stars such as Kate Beckinsale and Martin Sheen. Other features help readers to visualize relations between actors in a scene, understand how Shakespeare interweaves themes throughout the play, and to analyze the text more thoroughly.

"You can delve into the language or themes or interpretation, but our first task is to show that it's just a good story," Pettigrew said.

Although the app was designed with consumers in mind, Pettigrew believes it could also play a role in education, with students embracing the app over its print counterpart.

"For a 13-year old, Shakespearean language can be a barrier and to have something right there on the page is really helpful," he said.

According to Pettigrew, the publishing house chose to develop it for the iPad because it is the dominant tablet platform in schools, but he said they are considering Android and Windows 8 apps in the future.

Four more apps including "Twelfth Night," "A Midsummer's Night Dream," "Hamlet" and "Othello" are due to be released in coming months. They are available worldwide for $13.99 each.

Pettigrew said the app is vetted for accuracy by experts and includes ancillary material, which is designed to augment the original text.

"To borrow a Shakespeare phrase, 'the play's the thing.'"?
