BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government will not pull troops from cities and towns engulfed by the country's unrest before life returns to normal in these areas, a high-ranking official said, as activists reported fresh violence that claimed the lives of more than two dozen people across the nation Saturday.

The statement by Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi was the first response to an appeal by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to Syrian authorities to stop military activities as "the stronger party" in a "gesture of good faith" to the lightly armed opposition.

It suggests that any implementation of Annan's plan to end the conflict ? which Syrian President Bashar Assad has accepted ? will be a long and complicated process. Damascus appears to be playing for time by indicating broad agreement with the plan but then quibbling over or ignoring the details.

One of the centerpieces of the plan is the withdrawal of Syrian troops from cities, but Makdessi told state TV late Friday that the military is only in populated areas "in a state of self defense and protecting civilians."

"The Syrian army is not happy to be present in residential areas," Makdessi said . "Once peace and security prevail in these areas, the army will not stay nor wait for Kofi Annan to leave. This is a Syrian matter."

Makdessi also said it has defeated those seeking to topple the Syrian regime.

"The battle to bring down the state in Syria has already ended and the battle of reinforcing stability has started," he said, an apparent reference to recent gains by Syrian troops in their crackdown on the rebels.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, meanwhile, discussed with Saudi officials ways to pressure Assad to end the bloodshed.

"I believe we all agree on the need for an immediate cease-fire to the systematic killing," Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said at a joint news conference with Clinton.

He said arming the Syrian opposition is a "duty" so that it can defend itself against Assad's onslaught.

Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar have spoken about possible military intervention, from arming Syria's badly overmatched rebels to creating safe zones from which the rebels can operate.

Washington remains opposed to arming Syria's rebels, fearing a military escalation could lead to all-out civil war and play into Assad's hands, considering his vastly more powerful military.

Syria's uprising began a year ago with peaceful protests against Assad's regime. In the face of a fierce crackdown, the uprising has become increasingly militarized and opposition groups now say their only hope is to drive out Assad.

The U.N. estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

International opponents of Assad are struggling to pin down a strategy on Syria, as the peace plan put forward by Annan is failing to get off the ground.

Annan's six-point proposal to end the violence, which has been accepted by Assad, requires the government to immediately pull troops and heavy weapons out of cities and towns, and abide by a two-hour halt in fighting everyday to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations.

"The government must stop first and then discuss a cessation of hostilities with the other side," Annan spokesman Ahmad Fawzi told reporters in Geneva on Friday. "We are appealing to the stronger party to make a gesture of good faith ... The deadline is now."

Assad promised on Thursday to "spare no effort" to make sure Annan's plan succeeds. But he demanded that armed forces battling his regime commit to halting violence as well.

Many Syrians are frustrated at the lack of will for a foreign military intervention and are deeply skeptical Assad will carry out Annan's peace plan, saying the president has accepted it just to win time while his forces continue their bloody campaign to crush the uprising.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said Syrian troops foiled an infiltration attempt by gunmen from Lebanon into a village near the western town of Talkalakh. SANA said troops confiscated weapons and killed and wounded some of the infiltrators as others fled back into Lebanon.

In other violence, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government troops killed at least 25 people Saturday, mostly in the southern province of Daraa, the northwestern province of Idlib and the central region of Homs.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said security forces killed 24 people Saturday nine of them in Idlib and eight in Homs.

The Observatory reported shooting at a funeral in the posh Damascus neighborhood of Kfar Souseh of a man who was shot dead Friday by security forces. It had no word on casualties.

For the U.S. and its allies, Syria is proving an especially murky conflict with no easy solutions. Assad's regime is one of Washington's clearest foes, a government that has long been closely allied with Iran and anti-Israel groups Hamas and Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers terrorist. Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-led Gulf countries are eager to see Assad's fall in hopes of breaking Syria out of its alliance with their regional rival, Shiite-majority Iran.

Clinton was flying on Saturday from Saudi Arabia to Turkey for Sunday's 60-nation gathering of the "Friends of the Syrian People" in Istanbul.

She said officials meeting in Turkey would discuss "additional steps to increase pressure on the regime, provide humanitarian assistance despite the efforts of the regime to block access and advance plans for an inclusive, democratic and orderly transition that addresses the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Media had it all wrong: Commissioner wasn?t racist and Lawal got what he deserved

LAS VEGAS -- It's beyond stunning that anyone has tried to rationalize the behavior of former Strikeforce light heavyweight contender Muhammed Lawal and his manager, Mike Kogan, in light of their actions during and after Tuesday's disciplinary hearing in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Lawal's situation is so vastly different from those of Miguel Torres, Rashad Evans, Forrest Griffin and innumerable others who made, ahem, unwise public comments.

On Jan. 17, Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada commission, announced that Lawal had flunked a post-fight urinalysis following a Jan. 7 victory over Lorenz Larkin at the Hard Rock. Test results indicated he'd tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone.

On Tuesday, the commission heard from Lawal and Kogan and then suspended Lawal for nine months and fined him $39,000. Afterward, Lawal went to Twitter and ripped commissioner Pat Lundvall, calling her in a now-deleted tweet, "a racist [expletive]." Lundvall is white and Lawal is black. Lawal wrote:

I honestly feel like Lundvall was a racist [expletive] asking me if I can read or speak english

Not long after Lawal's tweet, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced the promotion had released Lawal.

Suddenly, it seemed, the MMA media was outraged. Specifically, many in the MMA media were apparently angered that Lawal was released by responding on Twitter to what he felt was an offensive question from Lundvall, who had asked him if he could read and understand English.

In a roundtable discussion on MMA Fighting, veteran journalist Mike Chiappetta said:

I can understand his anger for being asked such a degrading question.

Luke Thomas, who was doing the roundtable with Chiappetta, said Lundvall had been "patronizing" toward Lawal.

The very talented columnist Ben Fowlkes also took issue with Lundvall in his column on Sports Illustrated.com:

The old "Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth?" routine is not a rhetorical device one employs in respectful conversation with an equal. It's something you do only when you know the other person has to sit there and take it.

And my colleague at Cagewriter, Maggie Hendricks, attempted to compare Lawal's situation to that of Torres and Evans, among others. There were many others, but all missed the mark badly in their assessment of the situation.

Finally, Kogan railed against Lundvall's line of questioning in a piece on MMA Junkie on Wednesday. Kogan told reporter Steven Marrocco that Lundvall's manner of questioning was inappropriate.

There are ways to establish if a fighter understands what's going on or not. It was already done before the hearing even started. The very first thing they asked him was, 'Do you understand what's going on? Do you understand the charges against you? Do you understand you can be represented by [counsel]?' And he said yes. So to come back 20 minutes later and ask the man if he speaks and understands English is very offensive.

Lundvall is a very prominent litigator in Nevada, a highly respected attorney at one of the state's top firms. She's hardly the "idiot" that she was made out to be by many of my media brethren who were all too quick to try to run to Lawal's rescue without considering what happened.

First, Lundvall was doing what any legal questioner does. She was laying a foundation. She believed that Lawal had been dishonest. On a questionnaire he filled out at the weigh-in on Jan. 6, Lawal denied he had been injured or had taken any prescription or over-the-counter medications in the last two weeks. To the question that asked, "Have you had any injury to your knees, ankles, or feet that needed special evaluation/exam," Lawal checked no.

Kogan had told Christopher Eccles, the Nevada deputy attorney general who represents the athletic commission, on Jan. 18 that Lawal took no supplements. In an email to Eccles the next day, Kogan reversed course and said Lawal had taken supplements.

In his email to Eccles on Jan. 19, Kogan wrote:

I guess I misspoke on the supplements that Mo takes my bad on that, I never seen him take any so I assumed he does not. We made a list of all the supplements and meds that he has taken some of them on regular bases as supplement, some temporality or intermittently and some were administered by the doctor that was taking care of his knee.

Lundvall's reason for asking Lawal if he read and understood English is what lawyers do when they're building a case during questioning. She was boxing him in and leaving him no room. When he said yes, she asked about why he didn't disclose the knee injury on the questionnaire he filled out at the weigh-in and why he didn't mention he was taking something for it.

It had zero racist intent. She was trying to expose that Lawal hadn't been forthcoming with the commission until he was forced to do so.

It's also interesting to note that Lundvall uses the line of questioning frequently with fighters. On March 23, ?2011, boxer Michael Shane Steele tested positive for an anabolic steroid. Steele, who is white, appeared before the commission on May 20, 2011, and underwent rigorous questioning from Lundvall.

According to a commission transcript, the following exchange took place between Lundvall and Steele:

Lundvall: Do you have any other information that you are willing to share with the Commission to explain why you tested positive for banned substances?

Steele: None. Only the supplements I took and what I was trying to accomplish in taking them.

Lundvall: Do you read English?

Steele: Yes, ma'am.

Lundvall: Do you understand the written word?

Steele: Yes, I believe so.

Lundvall used nearly identical language in speaking to Steele, who is white, as she did to Lawal, who is black. The point is, Lundvall wasn't talking down to Lawal or taunting him because of his race. She was trying to establish why he hadn't answered the questions truthfully.

Lawal's case is different from the others because the others, such as Torres, Evans, Griffin and, yes, UFC president Dana White, only said or wrote something stupid.

Lawal scored a hat trick of errors:

? He flunked a drug test, which Torres, Evans and Griffin did not do.

? He was untruthful on his questionnaire.

? He made an outrageous and ill-advised comment on social media, attacking a prominent regulator. The move could come back to haunt the company.

Lawal, I believe, is a good guy. He's quick with a quip and extraordinarily accessible to the media, which is why he's so beloved.

But it doesn't matter if you're a good guy or not. The facts are the facts. Lundvall was only doing her job and White and the folks at Zuffa were only doing theirs when they cut Lawal.

Hopefully, he'll be brought back at some point, like has happened to Torres, Nate Marquardt and so many others in the past.

Let's get over this Mo was mistreated nonsense, though. He got what he deserved.

DoubleTwist adds Google Music support, gets an alarm clock app

DoubleTwist Alarm Clock
DoubleTwist is certainly still one of the better music management options for Android, and it just keeps improving. Two days ago the player app got an update and now it can hook into Google Music, though, it only recognizes songs that you've checked for offline access from within the Google app. An unfortunate restriction, but at least your tracks don't disappear into the ether if you prefer to play back your tunes via DoubleTwist. There's also new functionality coming to what is now less an app than an ecosystem, thanks to the just released DoubleTwist Alarm Clock. The functionality is pretty much what you'd expect -- set a time and pick a song from your DoubleTwist library to gently rouse you from your slumber (or kick your butt out of bed). The Alarm Clock is just $0.99 in the Play Market right now for the first 10,000 customers. After that it'll go up to $1.99. So don't waste any time, go download it now.

WSI Consolidated Blog: Even Home Based Businesses Need ...

Too many small businesses in the Virginia, Washington, DC and Maryland areas are home based businesses. IT, business consultants, professional organizers, event planners and caterers are only a few. These small businesses are imperative to local economy as well as our national economy.
?
But too many home based businesses operate without business insurance. Too many home based business owners hope that either nothing will happen, or that their homeowners insurance will cover any loss. Bad news, homeowners insurance does not cover any loss of equipment, nor does it cover any liability. If you work from home, not only do you need business insurance, but most likely,? your standard household insurance may be invalid if you work from home.

Many small business owners who operate out of their homes feel as though they don?t need business insurance, or they can?t afford it. But you have invested much in your business, and in your businesses future, your business should be properly insured. Business insurance can save you and your business from the unexpected.

Every home-based business should be safeguarded with commercial business insurance. Contact TriState Business Insurance for information on home based business insurance.

Consumer Group Turns The Screws In Euro Google Antitrust Investigation, Outcome Expected ?In Days?

google-euThe European antitrust investigation of Google, originally filed November 2010, looks like it might be entering the next stage of its development. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), a consumer-rights group that represents 42 regional groups in 31 countries, says that it expects the Competition Commission to release its findings "within days" and possibly by the end of this week. For anyone watching how these antitrust cases develop and get decided, if we do see a decision within days, that is a big deal.

Stocks close choppy session lower

By msnbc.com news services

Wall Street closed a choppy session lower Tuesday, while a number of large-cap stocks hit new highs as portfolio managers grabbed top performers as the end of the quarter approached.

With the quarter ending Friday, portfolio managers adjusted holdings by buying some of the best performers to dress up their portfolio. About 80 percent of stocks across all sectors of the S&P 500, especially high-end retailers and technology, are above their six-month moving average.

Apple Inc hit another all-time best of $614.91, boosting its market capitalization to $572 billion. There have been only a handful of instances where a U.S. company sported a higher market cap than Apple.

Also hitting 52-week highs, Walt Disney Co climbed to $44.50 and Home Depot Inc reached $50.34.

Still, the overall market showed signs of fatigue. On Monday, major stock indexes rallied more than 1 percent after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke signaled that supportive monetary policy will remain in place.

The S&P 500 has jumped 12.6 percent this year and some investors believe further gains will be more difficult. The nearly 6-month rally, without a major correction, has come partly after accommodative measures by central banks around the world.

In the latest economic report, U.S. consumer confidence dipped in March, while Americans ratcheted up inflation expectations to the highest level in 10 months.

Separately, U.S. single-family home prices were unchanged in January, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller index, suggesting a battered housing market continued to crawl along the bottom. Equities barely budged after either report.

Homebuilder Lennar Corp reported a sharp rise in first-quarter orders and said it saw strong signs of improvement in sales activity.

Reuters contributed to this report.

The unique electrical properties of graphene have enticed researchers to envision a future of fast integrated circuits made with the one-carbon-atom-thick sheets, but many challenges remain on the path to commercialization. Scientists from the University of Florida have recently tackled one of these challenges how to reliably manufacture graphene on a large scale.

The team has developed a promising new technique for creating graphene patterns on top of silicon carbide (SiC). SiC comprises both silicon and carbon, but at high temperatures (around 1300 degrees Celcius) silicon atoms will vaporize off the surface, leaving the carbon atoms to grow into sheets of pure graphene. Researchers had previously used this thermal decomposition technique to create large sheets of graphene, which were then etched to make the patterns required for devices. The etching process, however, can introduce defects or chemical contaminants that reduce graphene's prized electron mobility.

In contrast, the Florida team's technique allowed the researchers to confine the growth of graphene to a defined pattern as small as 20 nanometers. The team found that implanting silicon or gold ions in SiC lowered the temperature at which graphene formed by approximately 100 degrees Celcius. The team implanted ions only where graphene layers were desired, and then heated the SiC to 1200 degrees Celcius. At this temperature the pure SiC did not form graphene, but the implanted areas did. Using this technique, the team successfully created graphene nanoribbons, thin lines of graphene with nanoscale dimensions.

With further refining, the process, described in the American Institute of Physics' journal Applied Physics Letters, may be able to encourage selective graphene growth at even lower temperatures, the researchers write.

FSCI Tops Expectations Two Straight Times

FSCI has beaten the Zacks Consensus Estimate in each of the last two quarters. The first beat came in the September 2011 quarter saw when the company posted earnings of $0.17, $0.07 ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.10. The stock then moved higher by 4% after that 70% beat.

FSCI Recently Reported Earnings

On March 1, 2012 the company reported revenue of $46 million roughly $5 million more than the Zacks Consensus Estimate and lower than the $58 million reported in the year ago period. EPS of $0.72 was $0.41 ahead of the estimate or a 132% beat. As a result the stock moved less than 1%.

The stock didn?t move much on the huge beat due to what happened in the year ago period. For the December 2010 quarter, the company reported earnings of $0.93, $0.58 ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a 165% beat. The stock was up 6% following the earnings report. The beat in the final quarter of 2011 was smaller than the beat in the 2010 in both absolute and percentage terms.

Earnings Estimates Bumped Up

Following the most recent earnings report, analysts bumped up their earnings estimates for 2012. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2012 EPS moved from $1.91 in February 2012 to the current level of $2.22. That works out to an increase of 16%.

Valuations

FSCI has some very reasonable valuation metrics. The one that stands out is the 39x trailing earnings multiple that is well above the 17x industry average. Forward earnings are different picture, coming in at 14x its just below the 14.6x industry average. Price to book and price to sales both show the company trading at a discount to the industry average.

The Chart

The chart shows that the stock has recently broke through an upper resistance level. Having tested the $31 level two times in the last 12 months, the stock has recently pushed ahead and is poised to make new 12 month highs. With the 200 day moving average providing support in the high 20?s, the timing is good for aggressive stock investors to participate in what looks to be a rally for the stock. FSCI is a Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy).

Acupuncture London- How to Keep Yourself healthy

Take advantage of the magic of movement. Engaging in physical activity on a regular basis is one of the most effective and rewarding ways to lower your health care expenses. Numerous studies show that not only does exercise lower your risk of contracting almost all chronic medical conditions; it also helps keep you healthier in the near term as well. As a result, the number of times you need to see a physician will fall, as will the amount of money you?ll need to spend on medication. Acupuncture London is also well-known way to cure some ailments. It is an ancient method of healing.

Practice good dental hygiene. Flossing several times a day (particularly after meals and before bedtime) will help reduce your chances of getting cavities and having to make a visit to a dentist.

Flossing to remove food and plaque from between the teeth also can help prevent gum disease - another potentially costly detour from sound oral health.

Get a good night?s sleep. The benefits of a good night?s sleep should not be underestimated. Sleep is essential to good health and to mental and emotional well-being. A number of studies have shown that individuals who get an inadequate amount of sleep are at a higher risk for contracting certain medically related problems, including type two diabetes, cardiovascular complications, and depression. Each of these problems can have a substantial impact on your level of health care expense.

Practice healthy eating habits. Consuming a healthy diet and adhering to sound eating habits can not only make you look and feel better, it also can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, help protect you from osteoporosis, and boost your immune system. Among the steps that you can take to help make sure that your dietary and eating habits don?t wreak havoc on your efforts to minimize your health care costs are to eat breakfast every morning, add fish and omega-3 fatty acids to your diet, and eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Keep things in perspective. Chill out. Don?t let stress unduly affect your life or your health. Uncontrolled stress can (and will) evolve into distress, a condition that can disturb your body?s internal equilibrium. When this negative stress reaction occurs, your body can experience physical symptoms, such as a headache, an upset stomach, an elevated level of blood pressure, chest pain, sleep-related problems, and sexual dysfunction, as well as emotional problems (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc). Although you can?t always control what events happen to you in your life, you can control how you react to those events.

Maintain Efficiency When Dealing With Commercial Real Estate ...

23 March 2012

Posted by Dennis under: Key West Commercial Real Estate .

You have to ensure that the terms on rent roll and pro forma match up. If you fail to check out the terms, you might find something that is at odds with the rent roll and make the pro forma unreliable.

Experts recommend not purchasing unit blocks that have fewer than 10 units in them. This is because they can be more difficult to manage than smaller properties. No situation is the same as another, and proper reseal should help you reach a knowledgeable decision regarding any purchase.

Select your financing before you do anything else. The process of getting a commercial loan is vastly different to that of a residential mortgage. In some instances, commercial lenders are the better choice. While it is often more difficult to get a commercial loan, it becomes more worthwhile when you consider that this route allows you to sidestep personal liability. Furthermore, financial institutions are ultimately able to approve loans in larger amounts.

It is advisable to go bigger when investing money pertaining to commercial real estate. You may find that upkeep and operations for a twenty-unit property may actually be comparable to those required of a five-unit property. A property with nine units requires the same amount of time put into the financing as a building with nineteen units requires, but the larger one has lower per unit average prices and more rental income streams for you.

Now, you probably know much more about commercial real estate than you did when you started reading this article. You?re ready now, more than ever! This article probably gave you some ideas that you can use to invest in commercial real estate and make profits, doing so.

Arrest demand grows in Florida teen's shooting death

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? The investigation into last month's shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in an Orlando suburb is out of the hands of the beleaguered police chief and the county prosecutor with the Justice Department looking at possible civil rights violations and a grand jury perhaps considering charges.

Until admitted shooter George Zimmerman is led away in handcuffs, the parents of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and the civil rights activists and others who have rallied for their cause say they won't be satisfied.

"We cannot allow a precedent when a man can just kill one of us ... and then walk out with the murder weapon," said civil rights leader Al Sharpton, flanked by Martin's parents and a stage full of supporters at a rally in Sanford on Thursday night. "We don't want good enough. We want George Zimmerman in court with handcuffs behind his back."

Police Chief Bill Lee said earlier in the day that he was stepping down temporarily to try to cool the building anger that his department did not arrest neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman, who has said he shot Martin on Feb. 26 in self-defense. Hours later, the governor announced that the local state attorney, Norman Wolfinger, had recused himself from the case.

Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, believe Zimmerman should have been arrested. They claim he was profiling their son and acted like a vigilante.

Tracy Martin told the thousands at the rally to keep his son in their minds.

"If Trayvon were here, he would have been here tonight," he said. "He was a people person. Let's get justice for your son."

The signs, chants and sentiments all came down to a demand for justice in the case. Another rally was set for the state capitol Friday and students at Martin's Miami high school planned to walk out in protest in the afternoon.

At Thursday's protest, some people carried signs that said: "100 years of lynching, justifiable homicide. Same thing." Others sold T-shirts that read: "Arrest Zimmerman."

"It's the norm around here, where anything involving black culture, they want to wipe their hands of it," said Shella Moore, who is black and grew up in Sanford.

The Justice Department and FBI have opened a civil rights investigation, and the local prosecutor before he quit the case convened a grand jury April 10 to determine whether to charge Zimmerman.

Martin was returning from a trip to a convenience store when Zimmerman started following him, telling police dispatchers he looked suspicious. At some point, the two got into a fight and Zimmerman pulled out his gun.

Zimmerman told police Martin attacked him after he had given up on chasing the teenager and was returning to his sport utility vehicle. Police say the 28-year-old Zimmerman is white; his family says he's Hispanic.

The shooting ignited resentment toward the police department in this Orlando suburb for not making an arrest. Civil rights groups have held rallies in Florida and New York, saying the shooting was unjustified. Of Sanford's 53,000 residents, 57 percent are white and 30 percent are black.

In a letter to Gov. Rick Scott, state attorney Wolfinger said that while he thought he could fairly oversee any prosecution that develops in the case, his recusal was aimed at "toning down the rhetoric and preserving the integrity of the investigation." Scott appointed Angela B. Corey, the state attorney for the Jacksonville area, to take over.

The chief's decision came less than a day after city commissioners gave him a "no confidence" vote and after a couple of weeks of protests and uproar on social media websites. Lee has said evidence supported Zimmerman's assertion that the shooting was in self-defense.

"I do this in the hopes of restoring some semblance of calm to a city which has been in turmoil for several weeks," Lee said.

The chief said he stood behind his agency's investigation.

"As a former homicide investigator, a career law enforcement officer and a father, I am keenly aware of the emotions associated with this tragic death of a child. I'm also aware that my role as a leader of this agency has become a distraction from the investigation," Lee said.

Martin's parents said the police chief's action wasn't enough, and that Zimmerman should be taken into custody.

"We want an arrest, we want a conviction and we want him sentenced for the murder of my son," Martin's father, Tracy, said to the fiery crowd of protesters at Fort Mellon Park.

It wasn't immediately clear how long the police chief would step aside. Some people said he should just quit.

"If they wanted to defuse a potential powder keg, he needed to resign," said pastor Eugene Walton, 58, who was born and raised in Sanford. "His inaction speaks loudly to the black community."

News of the police chief's decision to step aside spread quickly among the protesters, many of whom showed up more than two hours before the start of the rally. They chanted "The chief is gone. Zimmerman is next."

Dick Gregory, a comedian who uses humor to convey his civil rights message, said the steady pressure should be the goal going forward.

"All you have to do is be a turtle," he said. "Hard on the outside, soft on the inside and willing to stick your neck out."

Latest Angry Birds isn't coming to Windows Phone, or maybe it is

The newest Angry Birds game either is or is not coming out for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform, depending on who at Rovio you ask.

Angry Birds Space, the company's latest title, launched for both Android and Apple's iOS earlier this week, immediately becoming both the top selling and top earning game on Apple's popular service. A Windows Phone version of the game has been conspicuously absent from any announcements from the company, whose original Angry Birds title is the number one selling game on the platform.

When asked about this, Rovio marketing head Peter Vesterbacka reportedly said the company has no plans to bring the game over, saying that the potential return on investment for "smaller platforms" such as Windows Phone might not justify porting the game over.

"We're the number one app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application," he told Bloomberg in a report that ran early Friday morning.

"We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms."

The report quickly spread, with Windows Phone manufacturer Nokia's stocks taking a notable hit and analysts chiming in about the implications of the number one Windows Phone game developer apparently dropping support for the platform.

"This is a worrying development for Windows Phone because it suggests that Rovio does not have much confidence in its future," said Nomura analyst Richard Windsor. "As the standard version is already number one on the Windows Phone app store, it gives a strong indication that no one else will expect to be making money writing for this platform either."

However, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed quickly dismissed these reports, committing his company to bringing out a Windows Phone 7 version of the game.

"We are working towards getting Angry Birds Space to WP7," Hed told Reuters.

"We are working closely together with Nokia to bring our games to their platforms," Hed said. "Our mutual goal is to bring the best possible experience to our fans, including all fans using Windows Phone devices."

Rovio's Angry Birds series of games has been downloaded more than 700 million times, according to the company.

Rovio values itself at at least $1.2 billion as it eyes an eventual IPO.

Freelance not free lunch ? Shelley Silas

I seem to be angrier or more upset or just driven to blog this week than any other week. But this one has been a long time coming, and it was finally propelled onto the page because someone tweeted my wife Stella, saying she is privileged to do what she does. She?s out there, in the public eye, speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak out, or are not given the chance to speak out and the person said she should do more of this, spend more of her time speaking out, for them. But she?s a writer, and she has to write in order to be where she is, and try and make a difference.

ANYWAY

She really isn?t privileged. Neither am I. I can only speak for me, so for those of you who think me (and she) might be privileged, here?s a brief history of me!

Left my secondary modern with three o-levels. First job ever, age 17 at Her Majesty?s Theatre as a dresser. I was earning the grand sum of @ ?34 a week, plus tips! I LOVED MY JOB. I got it by sheer determination, I made the phone calls, wrote the letters (yeah, we had to do it the old-fashioned way, and it took time and patience, the latter of which I have very little of these days, technology has made me impatient). I did that work for some time, went to drama school, worked during all my holidays as a dresser and later as a receptionist at the Pineapple Dance Studios, and as a motor cycle messenger, (albeit for one day), and in my local chemist and then I thought PR looked like fun, so managed to secure a job with a technical PR company (I know what ball valves and actuators are, do you?). Then I worked for Townsend Thoresen (I was there when the Zeebrugge ferry disaster happened), then I worked for a woman?s magazine (where I had some short stories published ? and rejected), worked my way from secretary to assistant fiction editor, left (actually was forced to leave), returned a year later to be fiction editor of another title (YES!). Did this for ages, worked in casting, as a casting assistant, which I had actually done before (in a small office in Soho with Beth Charkham, while her sister Esta was casting something big).

Applied for an English degree at Birkbeck, did that for four years (all paid for by me!) while working full-time. On to an MA in Creative writing, applied and received an award for my fees and maintenance, though I was still working full-time. By now I was in my late 30s. I started writing, but worked full-time, and gradually gave up the full-time work to write. And I have been freelance for about 15 years.

The word freelance makes some people think you don?t actually have a job, while others think, ooh, you?re so lucky, you can do what you want when you want, you can choose to get up late and go away when you want, you can watch day time TV (I never have) you don?t have to shop with everyone else at the weekend, when the supermarkets are packed with tired people with proper jobs. You can welcome the washing machine, dishwasher (we?ve only had one for 3 1/2 years, we?re not that posh) central heating repairman whenever it suits you. Yes, granted we freelancers can do all of this, and we do. But we don?t get sick pay or holiday pay or compassionate leave, or a guaranteed wage or a pension (my total pension will I think last 6 months). And if we wait for the washing machine, dishwasher, central heating repairman to turn up when he says he will, and mostly they don?t, we still have to do the work, we still have to create and finish our work in order to hope to be paid. And can I just add that often the pay comes months later.

I work whenever I can. I had intended to work on a play when I returned from university today, but I had some family business to attend to and then decided to write this blog!

I like continuity, I like to wake up, have two cups of tea, some breakfast, check my mail, tweet and Facebook and then work. All of that is a warm up for me. I prefer to have everything clear before I write and I like peace and quiet. So when we had major building work next door (six months on one side and three on the other), it was at times impossible to think, let alone write. But we did. Because we had to.

For the past two years I have been in the fortunate position of having a guaranteed income, not a great amount, but it has made an enormous difference to my otherwise financially unstable working life. I have a job at a university two days a week, and I love it. At the end of May, this job stops, and then I?m back to my financially unstable working life. Right now, apart from this lovely job, I am waiting to hear about six projects all in some stage of development, a mix of theatre, radio and TV and all with no money yet. I am also working on a new play, written on spec ? that means with no advance, commission, with no money yet. Many of us do this all the time. It?s just the way this profession is for some of us. Some of you may ask why, why would you work for no money? Because the possibility of making some proper money is always there, and things could change for me over night. And mostly, I love what I do. And I?d rather do the thing I love which has the possibility of making it big, than settle for less with no change to my working life or finances. I wouldn?t change it for anything.

And yes, there are writers who get huge advances and rolling commissions, but they still work hard and they had to start somewhere. So next time you have a paid day off to welcome the washing machine, dishwasher, central heating repairman, think of me, who is not getting paid to welcome any of these workers into my house, who does not have a technical department to sort out my computer as soon as I ask for help and not have to pay for it, who has to fit in other work around my actual work, teaching and talks and talking to new writers who want advice and events which we all have to go to, it?s just part of our job. And sometimes the events are glorious and sometimes they are dull, but it is part of what we do, and making an effort counts.

I know everyone thinks we have a glamorous life, (right now I am sitting in my claret dressing gown and pyjamas) and occasionally we do, we meet inspiring people and go to wonderful events. Most writers, book writers particularly, have to go to great lengths to promote their work, which include library talks, readings and interviews and sometimes TV and radio appearances, occasionally at very late notice, (sometimes for little money, sometimes for no money, hey it?s publicity, you want them to be paid as well?).

And then there are the meetings, ones which take up a whole morning or a whole afternoon or a whole day, which put an end to any real work, because when you return home you think about the meeting, and write up those great ideas you talked about, and answer 101 e-mails. Often those meetings could be taken on the phone or Skype, but the people with proper jobs like to go out and have a coffee or a glass of wine, it?s time away from their work, why wouldn?t they? Do you know how many meetings I?ve been to which have taken up so much time and amounted to nothing?

And then there?s the back ache from sitting, and not complaining (well, maybe a little) and booking expensive time with the osteopath to help your back ache so you can sit at your desk and work and get another back ache, and so it goes on. Do you know how many times people assume I can just sit down and write and keep writing, I can switch it on? I am not a light bulb. I have flashes of inspiration, but ideas have to be developed and worked on, and that takes times, and if you?ve stuck with this blog, you will see that writers often do not have time to do the thing that makes them money, the thing that will make them money. Those writers who are in the public eye, got there because of their work, and some of them do good in the world, but they have to keep working to keep their profile so they can keep making a difference. If they stopped working, the public would forget about them and that would be it! There are those who do take time to make change in the world, but we cannot do it 24/7. We have to work, it feeds us and it feeds you.

Talking of which, I might just get an hour of writing in before dinner and TV! Then again, I have just written over 1600 words. Mushroom soup tonight. Ah, privileged me.

Social Media Optimisation Boosts Online ... - bharatbhasha.net

Over the past few years, online marketing has become a fast paced, competitive world to keep ahead of. But as people use social networking sites more than ever before it provides a large opportunity for small businesses and large companies to reach their targeted consumers. The term Social Media Optimisation was introduced back in 2006 to tap the new social networking hype created by the Internet. The social networking sites provided a very good means to reach a huge mass of consumers. That eventually gave rise to the need to optimize the content that is presented to them. For the past few years the exponential growth of this area of the Internet has been proven by the supremacy of some big players such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn which all boosted the concept of Social Media Optimization. Many people are of the view that Social Media Optimisation will see the end of SEO, but we consider SMO to be another element alongside effective and ethical SEO for a successful online marketing drive. A well designed and implemented SMO strategy can help yield an outstanding Search Engine Optimisation benefit.

The internet marketer who created the term SMO believes that there are some factors that are important in quality Social Media Optimisation such as:
?Creating applicable content that can be shared among the customer
?Continuous communication with/and rewarding your readers
?Encouraging them to use their thoughts and contents to share with others
This use of social media optimization is more than just getting your content out to the world for customers to read, it is also used in maintaining an online reputation, building a brand, building link popularity, supporting customer relationship management and providing other high quality external sources linking back to one website. Facebook has been a major player in the social arena in the last few years. It has grown tremendously since its development and is the most used social media in the world. In terms of Social Media Optimisation, Facebook provides you with the ability to create your own content with your own page and share it with a highly targeted selection of consumers that can be segmented easily.

Twitter is a relatively new online socialite but it has 75 million users tweeting. They have taken the idea of a 'Status Update' and turned it into a worldwide communication channel that provides users with practically live updates in a multitude of different categories from businesses to celebrities. In terms of Social Media Optimisation, Twitter allows businesses to gather a following of customers or fans and market to them with relevant up to date content and links back to the company's website.

So a Social Media Optimisation campaign can be a very effective means of building your brand and a great source of leads from prospects that already enjoy or like your brand. Basic SEM and SEO techniques are important to driving traffic to your business's site, SMO just provides another new and extremely effective strategy that will build brand awareness and engagement and create two way communication that affects the rest of your overall marketing strategy.
